Zendaya may have been spotted using drugs in high school or kissing a superhero in school on screen, but she never really had a student life. Whether in Spider-man movies or ‘Euphoria‘, the actress has portrayed a school kid even in her 20s.
In a recent interview with Vogue, Zendaya discussed her profession in general and revealed that despite not having attended high school in real life, she plays a high school student in most of her movies and projects. The actress added that her new upcoming movie ‘Challengers‘ is “refreshing” and different from her usual roles. She asked her fans to take her for her actual age and not to perceive her as a high school kid as most of her friends are getting married and having kids. She said, “I’m always in a high school somewhere, And, mind you, I never went to high school.”
Zendaya did not complete her high school education. At the age of 14, she started working on Disney’s ‘Shake It Up‘, which launched her career. She eventually continued working in showbiz and didn’t get the time for schooling.
The actress continued by saying that all the child actors like her, matured quickly. She still experiences her angsty teenage phase even as an adult because she didn’t have the time to do those things back then. Zendaya also talked about how she always feels the need to be perfect and everything she does needs to be up to the expectations of others.
“I have complicated feelings about kids and fame and being in the public eye, or being a child actor. We’ve seen a lot of cases of it being detrimental,” Zendaya explained. “And I think only now, as an adult, am I starting to go, ‘Oh, okay, wait a minute: I’ve only ever done what I’ve known, and this is all I’ve known.’ I’m almost going through my angsty teenager phase now because I didn’t have the time to do it before. I felt like I was thrust into a very adult position: I was becoming the breadwinner of my family very early, and there was a lot of role-reversal happening, and just kind of becoming grown, really.”
Zendaya’s New Refreshing Roles
For a change, Zendaya is playing the role of a sportsperson in her new upcoming movie ‘Challengers’. The movie is a tennis sports drama that promises to deliver some intense competition and romance along the ride.
The movie is different from what Zendaya usually does. It would bring a sense of fresh change to her acting projects. The cast also includes Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist. It is set to be released by April 26, 2024.
