John Stamos has always been known for his charm, humor, and those irresistible good looks that made him a household name on ‘Full House.’ But beneath the surface, the actor’s life is full of unexpected twists and turns that keep his fans intrigued.
While most of us might imagine Scientology as something that attracts big Hollywood names like Tom Cruise or John Travolta, few would guess that Stamos once tried to join the ranks too. However, his attempt at becoming a Scientologist didn’t exactly go as planned.

John Stamos Wanted To Be John Travolta, But Scientology Had Other Plans
Stamos’s unexpected journey into the world of Scientology began at 17, all thanks to a crush and a dash of John Travolta-inspired ambition. The actor, who was then working at his dad’s restaurant, was invited by a “hot girl” from his acting class to a gathering on Hollywood Boulevard.
Thinking it was just a regular hangout, Stamos showed up, only to find himself at the Church of Scientology. His admiration for John Travolta, who has been a member of the church since 1975, played a big part in his decision to explore further.
During a conversation on the Friends in High Places podcast episode, Stamos shared, “Seeing [‘Grease’] was like, ‘I wanna be that.'” He added, “I wanted to be John Travolta, I still do. Well, minus the whatever it is that they do.”
Once inside, Stamos was asked to take a test on the church’s “E-Meter” device. It was described as “a calibrated device used for measuring extremely low voltages and psyche, the human soul, spirit or mind,” per the church.
But instead of taking it seriously, Stamos couldn’t resist goofing around. “I was doing a ‘Peabody and Sherman’ [impression] and they didn’t like that,” he revealed. The result? He was promptly kicked out. “I was just fucking around so much, they said, ‘Get out [and] get going.’ They just kicked me out.“

John Stamos Recalls The Creepy Details Of Scientology In His Memoir
In his 2023 memoir, ‘If You Would Have Told Me’, John Stamos further elaborated on this peculiar experience. Stamos wrote: “I’m walking to my car, and Mia runs out and hands me my workbooks,” referring to the “hot girl” he mentions in the podcast.
“‘Hey, you forgot these.’ She adds an extra book, the size of a brick, to my stack. ‘Start with this one,’ she says, smiling. ‘I think it will open your eyes to some amazing things.‘”
However, as Stamos later recounted, the material felt more “creepy as fuck” than enlightening. As he read through it while on shift at Yellow Basket, he realized that the church’s focus on control — of the mind, energy, space, and time — wasn’t for him.
“[One man] begins to question me about committing crimes, asks if I have negative thoughts about Scientology or [founder] L. Ron Hubbard and probes into some strange sex inquiries,” Stamos wrote in the book. “The Wayback Machine needle jumps in the corner, and Mia looks disappointed. Apparently, I’m not Scientology material. Darn it.”
