Would you have ever guessed how often Netflix plays matchmaker and brings two celebrities together? It certainly did so for actors Joey King and Jacob Elordi. The duo got together while filming the rom-com ‘The Kissing Booth‘ for the OTT giant in 2017. While their on-screen chemistry was undeniable, their offscreen romance skyrocketed.
The Hollywood pair was captured by the paparazzi spending time together on numerous occasions. They even spoke fondly about each other during interviews. While fans shipped the ‘reel to real’ couple hard, their romance fell apart. Here’s a look back on their story.
Joey King On Meeting Her Boyfriend Jacob Elordi On A Movie Set
In the Netflix hit movie, ‘The Kissing Booth‘, Joey’s character Elle Evans and Jacob’s character Noah Flynn start secretly dating. It’s a relationship that was disapproved by Noah’s younger brother, who happens to be Elle’s BFF. The reel romance led to real one.
Speaking about her first meeting with Jacob, Joey told Bello magazine in 2019, “Well, I thought he was very cute when we first met, but it started as a friendship. Right away we were talking about gross things with each other. But before long I started to realise, ‘Hey, I think I kind of like this person!’ It was such an interesting experience meeting your boyfriend on set because you spend so much time together and become so close so fast. We were spending 17 hours a day together, and all of us would hang out after work and watch movies together and stuff. It was great.”
They became Instagram official in April 2017 when the ‘Euphoria‘ star posted a photo of them in front of the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles. King’s first Instagram post with Elordi came two months later on his 20th birthday on June 26, 2017. From there, they posted more and more photos together. The duo was spending a significant amount of time travelling the globe throughout their romance. They even visited Jacob’s home country and took a trip to Boston.
When Things Went Downhill For The Cute Couple
Together, they looked like a match made in heaven until they weren’t. They seemed to have hit a rough patch in their relationship as rumors of a break-up started to surface online. The speculation arose after Elordi announced on his Instagram Stories that he was taking a break from social media. “G’day! Like to take a moment to thank everyone for the support over the last year,” the next possible Superman wrote. “I’m incredibly grateful to be able to connect with so many of you. I’m going to be signing off on this whole social media shabang while I work. Cheers for everything, stay happy :).”
He later deleted his Instagram entirely. After that, King took to Twitter and shared a cryptic message that convinced fans the two were over. “Thank god I have my dog tho,” she tweeted at the time.
That’s when the comments came. Fans flooded King’s Instagram comments section with questions about whether she and Elordi were still together. “Joey I want to know if it’s true or not coming from you because honestly, everyone hates rumours so please tell me if it’s true did you and Jacob break up?” one fan wrote at the time. Another noted that the last photo King had posted with Elordi was two months before in September 2018. King went on to delete all of her photos with Elordi, which confirmed that the two had broken up. Unfortunately, that seemed to be the end of Joey King and Jacob Elordi’s relationship.

Joey King Calls Working With Ex Jacob Elordi A “Sacrifice”
Less than a year later, King and Elordi reunited for ‘The Kissing Booth 2.’ Netflix announced in February 2019 that both King and Elordi had signed on to reprise their roles as Elle and Noah. Other cast members were announced in May 2019 and filming for the sequel finished in August 2019.
In an interview on the ‘Mood With Lauren Elizabeth‘ podcast in October 2019, ‘The Act‘ actress opened up about what it was like to film with her ex for the movie. She told the podcast host that the experience was “fine.”
“It’s a great movie,” she said at the time. “I personally am a fan of how it resonated with the world and it resonated with me. So going back, and doing that, and making the sacrifice, obviously, what everyone is thinking about. I’m not outwardly addressing, but what I’m kinda on the sly addressing, making those sacrifices was totally worth it.”
Still, despite her history with Elordi, King told Elizabeth that she still loves the film. “I am very much, like, a freakin’ huge fan of ‘The Kissing Booth’ myself which sounds really narcissistic, but I am. It’s my night light at night,” she said. “Because I don’t want to watch ‘Oh I don’t know what’s going to happen and I’m really invested to see what thing they’re baking on the ‘Great British Baking Show.’ I’ve already seen ‘The Kissing Booth‘.”
Both King and Elordi have moved on from their relationship now. While Elordi is dating influencer Olivia Jade Giannulli, King is engaged to producer Steven Piet whom she met on Hulu’s ‘The Act’.
