“It Comes From Me”: Katy Perry Defends Her ‘143’ Album Amid Outrage Over Dr. Luke’s Alleged Involvement In Writing Her Songs

Katy Perry has lost hundreds of Instagram followers over the outrage of songwriter, Dr. Luke‘s involvement in creating Perry’s upcoming album ‘143’. Perry has collaborated with the songwriter on many occasions to co-write songs- ‘I Kissed A Girl’ and ‘Teenage Drama’ for instance. In 2014, Dr. Luke was accused of sexual abuse by singer Kesha.

Dr. Luke was the producer of Kesha’s song ‘Die Young’. The singer had stated in her lawsuit that in 2005, Dr. Luke had drugged and sexually abused the singer. She also sued the songwriter for psychological and emotional abuse. The case was settled in June last year. However, new controversies have followed Dr. Luke over his alleged hand in creating Perry’s latest album. In light of the controversy, Perry took to social media to defend her album.

Amid the controversy, Katy Perry has come to the rescue of her upcoming album, ‘143’, in the Call Her Daddy podcast. Łukasz Sebastian Gottwald, professionally known as Dr. Luke, has produced Perry’s ‘143’ album. His involvement in a sexual assault lawsuit has made Perry’s album face some backlash. Talking to Alex Cooper about the same, Katy stated, “I understand that it started a lot of conversations and he was one of many collaborators that I collaborated with. But the reality is, it comes from me.”

Perry continued, “The truth is, I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that. One of the writers, one of the producers. I am speaking from my own experience.” Previously, Dr. Luke has co-written songs with Perry, ‘California Gurls’ for instance.

Katy Perry stated that her personal experiences were the source of the ‘143’ album. The ‘Roar’ singer further revealed that becoming a mother had inspired the singer to write ‘Woman’s World’, a song from the upcoming album. “When I speak about ‘Woman’s World,’ I speak about feeling so empowered now, as a mother, as a woman, giving birth, creating life, creating another set of organs. A brain! A heart! I created a whole ass heart! And I did it, and I’m still doing it,” she said.

Perry continued, “I’m still a matriarch and feeling really grounded in that, that’s where I’m speaking from. So I created all of this with several different collaborators, people that I’ve collaborated with from the past, from ‘Teenage Dream’ era. All of that.”

‘143’ will be released on September 20, 2024. Perry is scheduled to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 11, 2024, where she will also receive the Video Vanguard Award.
