Social media is currently fuming as a cringeworthy exchange took place on the latest episode of the SmartLess podcast. Charli XCX appeared as a guest, and the conversation with co-host Jason Bateman took an awkward turn. While the podcast shed some light on how the singer grew up as an only child, Bateman’s motherhood comments made everything uncomfortable.
Charli XCX stated how her parents supported her during all the mishaps over the years. As a result, she didn’t learn how to handle conflicts well. Next, Bateman asked the 33-year-old whether she would like to have kids. Soon, the light-hearted conversation turned sour.
Jason Bateman Gets Roasted After Grilling Charli XCX About Having Kids

Charli made her stance clear about motherhood: “I actually don’t really want to have kids.” She further added that her perception might change, but at the moment, she doesn’t feel ready: “I love the fantasy of having a child like naming it – it sounds so fun – but I’m like, that is exactly assigned to me as to why I should not have one, the fact that [naming it] feels like the coolest part about it.”
Bateman’s reply? His wife also did not want to have kids, but she changed her mind after meeting him. So, he thinks the right guy can spark that desire. “I guess I’m backing into giving myself a half a–ed compliment here, but my wife did not want to have kids, so the story goes. She said once we started going out, she thought, ‘OK, I think I can have a kid with this guy.’ So you might find somebody,” said Bateman.

Bateman didn’t anticipate Charli revealing that she is already married. So, the actor humorously admitted how he needs to read the news more often. While Charli laughed it off, the real damage came with his concluding hope: “[With] your next husband, you’re gonna want kids.”
Naturally, fans are not happy with such remarks and putting pressure on a woman to have children. Many called out Bateman for his lack of research on the guests he has to interview. The ‘Ozark‘ star’s questions also felt forced to many users over social media.
