Eric Dane was in the middle of a devastating ALS diagnosis when he unexpectedly discovered a friendship out of the headlines. When the popular actor, who has worked on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Euphoria’, fought against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, one of the most well-known Hollywood stars, Johnny Depp, intervened in silence.
Sources say Johnny Depp offered Dane a place to stay in one of his Los Angeles homes after the actor revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in April 2025.
When ALS Changed Everything For Eric Dane, Johnny Depp Stepped Up

The arrangement between Dane and Depp was simple and deeply compassionate. Dane could pay what he was able to, or nothing at all. To Dane, who had started to lose muscle control only a few months after he had announced his diagnosis in April 2025, it was one less burden on already strained shoulders.

ALS is a relentless disease. Dane lost the use of his right arm by June 2025. He confessed in an emotional interview on Good Morning America that the progression was sobering, and that he feared that his left side would soon follow.
Depp was able to offer stability as medical expenses increased and his working capacity became more restricted. Dane, who lived above the Sunset Strip, was reportedly not concerned with rent, but only with his health, his family, and the time he had left.
Eric Dane’s Inspiring Final Chapter

Dane died Thursday at 53, surrounded by his wife and daughters, Billie and Georgia. His family said in a statement that he faced ALS with courage and resilience. His body grew weak, but his determination did not. He became a board member of Target ALS to promote research and treatments, and he was willing to transform personal tragedy into shared hope.

He also delivered a chillingly personal performance on ‘Brilliant Minds’, portraying a firefighter struggling with the same disease that was transforming his own life. There were setbacks. In January, he had to cancel a scheduled appearance at an ALS Network gala because of the physical realities of the disease.
Still, those who were close to him say that he was always conscious, conscious of impact, conscious of doing what he could as long as he could.
