Denzel Washington and Josh Brolin were quite the pair in ‘American Ganster.’ Both the actors were a treat to watch together, but as Brolin now reveals, things weren’t that smooth between the two.
During his recent interview on the “In Depth With Graham Bensinger“ podcast, Josh Brolin revealed a heated interaction he had with Washington on the set of Ridley Scott’s film. Here’s everything he revealed.
Denzel Washington Smacked Josh Brolin On The Set Of ‘American Gangster’
Washington, who was portraying the infamous drug kingpin Frank Lucas, was late to set and changed the arrangement of their lines, as Brolin remembered. “Denzel was a little late to set and there was a whole thing there. And then he showed me the lines… he didn’t change any of my lines, but he kind of changed the structure of it. He said, ‘I think I’m gonna put this down here and I’m gonna put that up there.’ But he wouldn’t really look at me.”
When Brolin couldn’t remember a line during a rehearsal, he put his hand on Washington’s shoulder and asked for it. In keeping with his persona, Washington smacked Brolin’s hand away and said, “Don’t ever f***ing put your hand on me.”
Brolin then added that he thought: “‘Holy s***, I’m gonna scrap with Denzel Washington. This is crazy.’
He explained that the altercation was brief because Washington immediately returned to his professional manner. After that, the actors finished shooting the scene and Washngton asked Brolin if he’s okay.
Brolin stressed that the two are now on good terms and blamed the incident on Washington’s strategy of pretending to be Frank Lucas.

Washington’s character, Frank Lucas, was a drug dealer in Harlem in the 1960s and 1970s, and Brolin played Detective Trupo in the 2007 movie.
The film was Washington’s first working relationship with Ridley Scott, who later persuaded him to appear in Gladiator II.
