“Looks Like An Atlas”: Kate McKinnon Reveals ‘Gross’ Tongue Condition

SNL‘ alum Kate McKinnon recently opened up about a mouth condition that she has been diagnosed with, and it’s surprising even to her. The 41-year-old star labelled the condition “gross.”

McKinnon was asked by People about the last photo she snapped on her phone. While answering, instead of showing a selfie or a pet picture, she showed a picture of her tongue. It was sudden and awkward, but it’s educational.

When asked about why her tongue looks so weird, McKinnon called it ‘geographic tongue.’ She explained, “Your tongue sheds in patches and looks like an atlas, hence the name.”

McKinnon also joked, saying that both she and her friend have the same tongue condition and they constantly share notes with each other. Once all was said and done, Kate had the ultimate realization that she probably shouldn’t have shared all that with a magazine. Hah, took you long enough!

For those wondering if there’s anything at all named ‘geographic tongue,’ then let us tell you, it’s true. According to the National Institute of Health, it is an inflammatory condition that makes the tongue look like a map. In this condition, some tongues are covered with papillae, known as ‘tiny bumps’, while other patches lack these bumps.

While most of the actors would prefer to keep such ‘gross’ personal details to themselves, McKinnon isn’t one of them. We have always seen her being humorous. And now, even when the incident was about her personal life, she didn’t shy away. Apart from the tongue disorder, Kate shared a glimpse of the other sides of her life.

McKinnon revealed her latest obsession with following the lifestyle blog of a family from Azerbaijan. She even ended up oversharing about her new impulse buy. It’s a portable band saw, a tool commonly used by electricians and plumbers. According to the comedian, it’s the best tool for home improvement and DIY, and “cuts copper pipes and rods.” She’s been tackling DIY projects, too, like faux wood-beam ceilings, and shared that she’s gone down a fermentation rabbit hole.

Besides all these quirky hobbies, McKinnon is also front and centre in Jay Roach’s new film ‘The Roses.’ In the movie, she stars alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, and Allison Janney. Beyond the spotlight of Hollywood, she’s now on her journey to become a children’s author. Her latest release, ‘Secrets of the Purple Pearl,’ is the second instalment in her series The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science and has received a lot of praise.

Between her movies, her writing, and her unexpected hobbies, McKinnon has plenty on her plate. Yet it’s her honesty that continues to make her stand out.
