Leonardo DiCaprio Admits His Biggest Regret From His Time With Martin Scorsese

After working closely with Martin Scorsese for more than two decades, Leonardo DiCaprio recently spoke about something he wished had gone differently during their time together.

DiCaprio admitted that even with all their success, one personal regret has stayed with him throughout their long working relationship.

DiCaprio first teamed up with Scorsese in 2002 on ‘Gangs of New York.’ That project changed the course of his career and marked the beginning of a partnership built on trust and creative risk. From that point forward, Scorsese continued to challenge DiCaprio with intense, demanding roles.

As the years passed, DiCaprio became known for throwing himself completely into his performances. In every Scorsese film, he stayed locked into understanding his character. That same focus carried into their most recent collaboration, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’ The film earned 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and proved that their creative connection remains just as strong today.

During a live discussion at the A Year in TIME event in New York City on December 10, DiCaprio openly shared the one thing he wished he had done differently while working with Scorsese. He explained that he stayed so focused on acting that he rarely looked beyond his own performance.

DiCaprio said he spent most of his time making choices as an actor, trying to understand the emotional depth of each character. Because of that, he admitted he missed opportunities to watch Scorsese work behind the camera. He told Scorsese that he wished he had been more of an observer on set, taking time to see how scenes were being done and stories were built from the director’s side.

Scorsese responded by explaining that he usually plans shots and works through scripts on his own before filming begins. He also praised DiCaprio, saying the actor often delivered performances that felt almost impossible to achieve. The two also confirmed they are preparing for their seventh film together, though they kept details private. They did share that filming is expected to start in February.
