Robert Downey Jr. Reveals How Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Made Him Believe In Iron Man’s Potential

We can’t picture anybody else wearing the classic red and gold suit like Robert Downey Jr. He has portrayed Tony Stark since the first Iron Man picture in 2008. But believe it or not, even Downey had second thoughts about taking on the part that would push him to the forefront of the MCU.

Long before the MCU became the box office behemoth it is today, Downey Jr. had a chance encounter that would shape his career. As many of us know, ‘Spider-Man‘, starring Tobey Maguire, was one of the earliest Marvel films to really make a splash. It was during this time that he had a visit with Maguire on the set of one of his Spider-Man films.

While appearing on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Robert Downey Jr. opened up about how that visit to Maguire’s ‘Spider-Man‘ set had a profound impact on his decision to embrace the role of Iron Man.

In real time… I saw how difficult they were, how rewarding they could be, and how popular [comic book films] were becoming,” Downey shared.

I had been clean long enough… hungry even longer and I could feel [the] obsession coming back with manifesting the best version of myself,” Downey revealed.

He even mentioned that he had been “furiously strength training six times a week before I even knew [this role] was coming… and my shrink had told me ‘just start acting like something great is gonna happen and get ready for it.'”

RDJ has already made his return to the MCU as Doctor Doom, following Iron Man’s heroic death in ‘Avengers: Endgame‘.

While the story of the film is not confirmed, it’s fun to imagine the potential. A project like Avengers: Secret Wars‘ could offer the perfect setting for this epic meet-up. Just imagine Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Doctor Doom all in one film!
