When the ‘Dune: Part Three‘ cast joined director Denis Villeneuve in Los Angeles on March 16 to unveil the trailer, Pattinson finally shared how it all began. The Twilight actor made it clear that his interest in the franchise wasn’t new. In fact, he admitted, “I absolutely adored these movies,” while referring to Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), and adding that he watched them “multiple times in the theaters.”

Naturally, that admiration led him to take a chance. While working with Zendaya on their film The Drama, Pattinson casually asked her, “Can I get in one of those ‘Dune’ movies?” In response, Zendaya kept it quite casual and ended the conversation by saying, “I know a guy.” And that was all. Pattinson had no idea what was going to happen next.

A few months later, Pattinson received what he described as “a very unexpected call.” He even told Zendaya, “I kind of did think you [had] something to do with it!”, clearly suggesting that her connection may have helped open that door for him.

Robert Pattinson takes up the role of Scytale, a genetically engineered shapeshifter capable of taking on any appearance at will. In the trailer, his character is introduced right as Paul says, “War feeds on itself. The more I fight, the more enemies fight back.” By now, it’s clear that Pattinson’s role will be a formidable opponent in this movie.

“It’s an extremely fun character to play,” Robert Pattinson commented, “and the look for it is extraordinary.” His look in the movie, with shaved eyebrows and a bleached buzz cut, is unlike any role Pattinson has played before.

The actor also commented on the ambiguous nature of his character. “You can’t really tell whose side he’s on, which is what makes him quite interesting.”

Scytale is indeed a very unusual character in the books, and it is undeniable that he is not your conventional bad guy. “He might even be a good guy. Who knows?” Pattinson teased, “I will find out when I see the movie.”

Given the scale of the project, Pattinson didn’t hold back while speaking about the experience. During the trailer event, he said, “The cast is so incredible,” before adding that “everybody wants to work with Denis.” He went on to call Villeneuve “a master,” explaining that once you see the “scope and scale and ambition” on set, it becomes clear why the films translate so powerfully on screen.
