Ryan Gosling did not just struggle with discipline as a child; he was actually pulled out of school because of it. The actor once revealed that his habit of swearing in third grade became so difficult to control that his mother had to take strict action.
The situation looked like punishment at the time, but it turned out to be a major turning point that brought him closer to cinema.
Ryan Gosling Reveals The Unusual Punishment His Mom Gave Him For Swearing

While accepting the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Ryan Gosling reflected on the early influence his family had on his life. He described his mother as “deeply instrumental” in his success and credited her for guiding him during his early years, long before he stepped into the film industry.

Gosling shared that during third grade, he had developed a habit of swearing constantly. He did not think it was a problem, but his teachers strongly disagreed, and his mother found it difficult to stop him.
He recalled, “My mother said it was almost impossible to get me to stop, but I remember the night she figured it out. We were at the dinner table, and she said, ‘If you swear one more time, you can’t watch any movies tonight.’ And I thought that was extreme, so I used some extreme language back. She said, ‘OK, now you can’t watch movies for a week.’”
That warning did not stop him. His mother responded by increasing the punishment again. “Well, now you can’t watch movies for a month.” Gosling said that this moment made him understand his attachment to films, as “it wasn’t until that exact moment that I realized just how much movies meant to me.”
Homeschooling Became Gosling’s Turning Point Toward Cinema

After recognizing the impact of the situation, Gosling’s mother made a bold decision. She pulled him out of public school and homeschooled him for a year. This built a system that encouraged better habits.

Gosling explained, “She found my weak spot. She knew it, and soon after that, she took me out of school and homeschooled me for a year. So part of her curriculum was weekly visits to the library to check out books I had no intention of reading. She had a solution for that, too. The library had a collection of films, and she made a deal with me that for every book I read, I could rent a movie.”
This method pushed him to read and also allowed him to enjoy films. Over time, he spent more hours watching movies and connecting more deeply to cinema, which later became his career. So, all thanks to Gosling’s school; otherwise, we would never have had the chance to see a star like him!
