Legendary Hollywood filmmaker Steven Spielberg delivered a calm, befitting response to Timothee Chalamet‘s recent ignorant remarks, calling opera and ballet culturally irrelevant, during a panel at the 2026 SXSW Conference and Festival.
Spielberg, known for delivering countless blockbusters and cult classics over the years, was speaking about the magic of moviegoing experiences. While reflecting on cinema’s ability to bring people together, the 79-year-old pivoted to address the controversy sparked by the 30-year-old Oscar nominee earlier this year.
Timothee Chalamet’s Controversial Opera And Ballet Comments

The controversy began when Timothee Chalamet appeared in a February CNN/Variety town hall alongside Matthew McConaughey to promote his film ‘Marty Supreme.’
“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, or you know, things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive,’ even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore,” he commented. “All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason.”

Chalamet’s comments soon drew sharp criticisms from arts communities, fans, and performers, who accused Chalamet of elitism and undervaluing centuries-old traditions.
Ballet stars Misty Copeland and Tiler Peck and opera singers Andrea Bocelli and Isabelle Leonard have publicly objected to Chalamet’s remarks. Other notable names, such as Whoopi Goldberg, Karla Sofía Gascón, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Charlie Puth, also weighed in.
Steven Spielberg’s Response To Timothee Chalamet

Steven Spielberg directly countered the narrative, stating, “At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with, or into the nighttime with. And there’s nothing like that. It happens in movies, and in concerts.” He added, “And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way.”

The line drew immediate cheers and applause from the audience as Spielberg continued, “And we want that to be sustained. We want that to go forever.”
Chalamet has not publicly responded to Spielberg’s comments as of Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the director is gearing up for the release of ‘Disclosure Day,’ his first feature since 2022’s ‘The Fabelmans.’
