He came, he saw, and he conquered! Johnny Depp, after the highly publicized defamation trial, is back to do what he does best. Hollywood ousted the actor due to the domestic abuse accusations that surfaced during the trial. Amber Heard wrote an op-ed in 2018 for the Washington Post that hinted at the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor physically assaulting her. However, the trial concluded with the juror siding with the actor.
Now, at the coveted Cannes Film Festival 2023, Johnny Depp made a comeback with ‘Jeanne du Barry,’ which was the opening night film kick-starting the festival. The controversial film already drew backlash due to Johnny Depp and its other actor, writer, and director, Maïween. The film focuses on the last mistress of King Louis XV, Madame Jeanne du Barry, before his fate was sealed. Despite mixed reviews from the critics, Depp garnered thunderous applause for the performance, along with a seven-minute standing ovation.

The moment was clearly touching for the actor after the strenuous court case that caught the attention of the world. It is Depp’s first major project since the infamous trial. In the film, he plays Louis XV. Maïween wrote the film along with Teddy Lussi-Modeste and Nicolas Livecchi. She plays the titular character in the film. Jeanne is not a mere damsel in distress who had a luck factor to play in her life, but she climbed the social ladder with clever strategizing. The reviews are not quite positive for the film and Depp’s casting, but the fans on the internet are rejoicing at the moment.

‘Jeanne du Barry’ already came under fire after it was announced that it would be screened during the opening night. Despite the protest and the widespread hashtag #CannesYouNot, the film received a positive response in the France. Thierry Fremaux addressed the Depp situation during the press conference.
Thierry said, “I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the U.S. To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule: It’s the freedom of thinking, and the freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework. If Johnny Depp had been banned from acting in a film, or the film was banned, we wouldn’t be here talking about it.”
The fans of the actor shed a happy tear for him on the internet.
