The Outrageous ‘Michael Jackson’ Story That Got Young Robert Pattinson in Trouble

In Short
  • Robert Pattinson confessed to lying in school, claiming his father was Michael Jackson.
  • He recorded an album to support his fabricated story about ginkgo biloba.
  • Pattinson's tendency to tell outrageous stories continues into adulthood, now reflected in his daughter's imaginative tales.

Robert Pattinson has shared plenty of strange and hilarious stories over the years, but one recent confession takes things all the way back to his childhood, and it’s as bizarre as it gets.

While promoting his latest film, the actor revealed that one of his earliest lies landed him in serious trouble at school. It was all because he told everyone his father was Michael Jackson.

The Unusual Reason Behind Robert Pattinson’s ‘Michael Jackson’ Lie

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Robert Pattinson opened up about his long-standing habit of stretching the truth. While discussing his new film, ‘The Drama‘, he admitted that he once thought this tendency only showed up during interviews. But it actually started much earlier.

Pattinson revealed that he used to get into trouble at school for lying “quite a lot”. And one particular incident still stands out. During a show-and-tell session, he confidently told his classmates that his dad was Michael Jackson.

The claim quickly landed him in trouble with the teachers. And, looking back, he seemed amused by the memory, even though it clearly didn’t go down well at the time.

How A Childhood Obsession Led To The Lie

Pattinson explained that this bizarre story actually came from a very specific childhood fascination with ginkgo biloba supplements. He said he loved the name of the pills, and since both of his parents were taking them. It somehow became part of the story he created.

To make his claim believable, he recorded one of Michael Jackson’s real albums onto a tape. Then he told his classmates, “My dad’s been taking this medicine called ginkgo biloba, and this is him singing,” as if the tape were proof.

Unsurprisingly, the story didn’t convince anyone for long. Instead, it landed him in “lots of trouble” at school once teachers realized he had completely made it up.

That Michael Jackson story became part of a pattern that followed Pattinson into his adult life. Over the years, he has become known for telling unusual, often unbelievable stories during interviews.

He later admitted that he had fully fabricated a story about witnessing a clown die in a car explosion during a 2011 interview. Reflecting on it, he said there was “absolutely no hesitation” in his voice while telling it. And it even made him question himself afterward.

He also once told GQ that he barely worked out while preparing for ‘The Batman‘, saying, “I’m just barely doing anything.” But two years later, he admitted that wasn’t true. He explained that he simply finds it embarrassing to talk about working out, especially when playing Batman, which clearly requires it.

Interestingly, Pattinson now sees a similar imaginative streak in his personal life. He shared that his daughter, whom he welcomed with his fiancée, Suki Waterhouse, in March 2024, already tells convincing little stories of her own. He described how she can walk into a room and insist she sees something like a giraffe, and make it sound completely believable.

At the same time, he joked that she won’t fall for his tricks. According to Pattinson, she already seems able to see right through him. So, while his childhood habit of storytelling lives on, he may have finally met someone who isn’t so easily convinced.
