The Real Reason Why Kate Hudson Rejected The Role Of Mary Jane In ‘Spider-Man’

Kate Hudson has finally addressed one of the most talked-about casting decisions of her career: her choice to turn down the role of Mary Jane Watson in ‘Spider-Man‘.

She admitted that joining the superhero film would have been nice. Yet, she firmly believes the movie found the right people without her.

Hudson recalled the casting story during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. When a fan asked if she had turned down the role of Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man‘, Hudson answered directly and said yes. She explained that looking back now, the role still meant a lot to her.

Hudson admitted that being part of a ‘Spider-Man‘ movie would have been exciting, especially knowing how huge the franchise eventually became. However, she also made it clear that the decision made sense to her at the time. She chose a different project based on where she was in her life and career at the time, not knowing how iconic ‘Spider-Man‘ would later become. It was called ‘Four Feathers,’ with Heath Ledger playing the leading man.

Hudson openly admitted that when she looks at ‘Spider-Man‘ today, she sometimes thinks it would have been fun to play Mary Jane Watson. She said being part of that world and that film experience would have been nice. At the same time, she said that these thoughts do not come from regret. Hudson explained that she does not wish she had changed her decision or feels she made the wrong call.

She also shared that conversations like this can feel uncomfortable. According to Hudson, once a movie is made, it belongs to the actors who played those roles, and she does not like questioning choices after the fact.

The role of Mary Jane Watson ultimately went to Kirsten Dunst, who went on to play the character across the trilogy, including Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. Hudson said she fully believes the movie found the right person for the role. She explained that the people who end up in a film are usually meant to be there. In her view, ‘Spider-Man’ worked because the cast fit the story and characters perfectly.

While she admitted it would have been nice to be part of a Spider-Man movie, she strongly believes the film landed with the right cast, and she is completely at peace with how everything turned out.
