Frank Darabont is back, and it’s not for another prison drama or crime thriller. This time, he’s diving into the world of Demogorgons and the Upside Down. The Oscar-nominated director, known for films like ‘The Shawshank Redemption‘ and ‘The Green Mile‘, had been off the radar since 2013’s ‘Mob City‘.
Fans of Darabont’s work may have thought he’d quietly retired from Hollywood. But, surprise! He’s making his return, not for a blockbuster, but to direct episodes of the final season of ‘Stranger Things‘.
Why ‘Stranger Things’? Frank Darabont Says It’s Got “Heart”
In an interview with The Daily Beast, director Frank Darabont revealed what dragged him back to the director’s chair. Turns out, it wasn’t just his wife’s fandom. “What really dragged me out of retirement was that my wife and I really love this show,” explained the Oscar-nominated director.
In his interview, Darabont shared that he finds most modern shows too dark and full of, as he put it, “horrible people doing horrible things.” ‘Stranger Things‘ is a show that, despite its horror and sci-fi elements, oozes with warmth and heart.

“Stranger Things has so much heart,” Darabont said. Although he hasn’t spilled the beans on how many episodes he’ll be helming or which ones exactly. However, judging by the buzz, it’s clear his touch will be all over this final season.
Shawn Levy Hints At Episode Shifts For The Final Season
Shawn Levy, who’s been a steady hand directing ‘Stranger Things‘, recently hinted that things might not be business as usual this time. Levy, who typically directs the 3rd and 4th episodes of each season, told Collider, “You can do the math,” implying that his episode lineup might shift for season 5.

Levy mentioned he’ll be taking on a “later episode.” When asked if he would also be in charge of the finale, the director simply replied, “That’s all Duffer’s, as it should be.” So, with Levy stepping back from his usual slot, there’s a good chance Darabont could direct some of the earlier episodes.
