Before working with a filmmaking titan like Martin Scorsese, you take advice from the people who know him best. For Jennifer Lawrence, that meant turning to Leonardo DiCaprio, who has been working with the iconic director since 2002 and has collaborated with him on six feature films so far.
As he and Lawrence gear up for an upcoming project under Scorsese, DiCaprio couldn’t help but share some unexpected advice. Instead of sharing deep acting methods, the ‘Shutter Island‘ actor gave her a bizarre tech warning. As it turns out, surviving a Scorsese production requires ditching modern streaming and using an outdated form of physical media.
Leonardo DiCaprio Revealed Martin Scorsese’s Retro Requirement

Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio are starring in a Martin Scorsese project, an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel ‘What Happens at Night.’ Produced by Apple Original Films and Studiocanal, the movie will hit theaters next year.

In December 2025, the actor duo appeared on Variety’s Actors on Actors to discuss their releases: Lawrence’s ‘Die My Love’ and DiCaprio’s ‘One Battle After Another.’ The conversation turned to their 2027 project, which follows an American couple traveling to a Northern European town to adopt a baby.
But once they check into the hotel where “nothing is as it seems,” they face mysterious hindrances that prevent them from adopting the baby from the orphanage. This project will mark DiCaprio’s seventh film with Scorsese, while it will be Lawrence’s first film with him.
When Lawrence asked whether there was anything she should “absolutely know” about working with Scorsese before starting shooting in January 2026, DiCaprio didn’t hold back. “It’s a great thing, and he’s going to give you a lot of film references”, which the actor noted comes in DVD format.
“And if you don’t have a DVD player, get one,” he added, to which Lawrence joked, “Oh my God. I’m going to kill myself.” Moreover, DiCaprio then went on to describe how detailed Scorsese’s directing process is.
“If there’s something that he wants you to capture from an old film or the pacing of something, you might have a screening of a whole film just for a specific scene that he wants to see. We might see some Japanese ghost films for reference, just to get the tone of it. You’re going to have an amazing time.”
Scorsese On His Successful Relationship With DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio’s understanding of Scorsese’s work culture comes with years of experience. He was 27 when he first worked with Scorsese on ‘The Gangs of New York’ in 2002.

Later, he starred in ‘The Aviator,’ ‘The Departed,’ ‘Shutter Island,’ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ and, most recently, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’ In December 2025, Scorsese reunited with DiCaprio and revealed the two traits behind their successful working relationship.
“We have this ability to collaborate, and it’s based on trust and love,” Scorsese said at a Time Magazine event, where DiCaprio was honored as 2025 Entertainer of the Year. “We go to places sometimes that at times feel almost impossible.”
Meanwhile, DiCaprio revealed that one of the most important parts of their working relationship is that they can “debate for months” about films and screenplays as part of their cinema knowledge.
“It’s lots of questions and lots of playing devil’s advocate about a way to approach things that may not be the most obvious direction,” DiCaprio explained. “We’re doing that on the new film that we’re doing now, but it’s been absolutely one of the most profound learning experiences.”
