“They’re Losing A Lot Of The Most Creative Minds”: Harmony Korine Says Hollywood Is Crumbling Creatively

Films and television has been an excellent medium of showing the society a mirror for ages. Other than entertainment, films have also been an essential tool for propagating both awareness as well as the essence of creativity in a socio-political sense or otherwise.

However, over time, cinema has seemingly lost its lustre. And it isn’t us claiming that, director Harmony Korine is. During the Venice Film Festival, Korine touched on the fact that Hollywood has lost its essence of creativity. It has so much potential to inspire young minds, yet has restricted their art form. Here’s all he said.

During the Venice Film Festival, Harmony Korine doubled up his thoughts while smoking a cigar on how Hollywood has degraded its work quality. He said, “we’re starting to see Hollywood crumble creatively” because it’s “so locked in on convention.” While continuing to smoke during the press conference, he added how Hollywood is not inspiring the youth.

Hollywood needs to encourage — they don’t need to, but they would be smart to — encourage the youth, the kids. Why we’re starting to see Hollywood crumble creatively is because they’re losing a lot of the most creative minds to gaming and to streaming,” he added.

He continued, “They’re so locked in on convention and then all those kids who are so creative are now just going to find other pathways and go to other places because movies are no longer the dominant art form.”

Korine was at the hand premiere of the film ‘Baby Invasion’, his latest experimental project after ‘Aggro Dr1ft’. He teased that the audience will be getting only a “base layer” and the overall experience of the film will be offered in the theatres.

Harmony Korine further talked about his film ‘Baby Invasion, as he added, “When we release the film, there’ll be a way to watch it through your phone, but there’ll be certain codes within the movie that’ll take you to other movies.”

So the film, what you’re seeing, is just a base layer film. There’ll be three or four other sub films,” he said.

As per the film’s narrative, a group of merchandise disguises themselves as baby faces, and invades the mansions of rich and powerful people. “It’s horror, right, because what they’re doing is horrible, but they’re also so cute. They’re so adorable to watch. But these little children are just menaces, just vile creatures,” he explained.

To add realistic factor, the director used the real footage from his friend’s security camera who was robbed based on the movie which didn’t have a traditional script. “Some of the cast were actually people that tried to rob a lot of friends of mine,” he said. “Once they were arrested, we cast them and it just added that extra sense of reality,” he added.
