Timothée recently opened up about the moment in a clip released on January 20 with his former ‘Interstellar‘ co-star, Matthew McConaughey. Reflecting on his birthday night, he admitted he wasn’t exactly cheerful during the drive to Kylie’s surprise.
“I was grumpy on the way there because I didn’t know where she was taking me,” he shared. Since it was his 30th birthday, he didn’t understand why they were driving 30 minutes outside of Los Angeles.
Instead of feeling excited, he felt confused about the long drive. He had no idea Kylie had planned something deeply meaningful. Looking back, he clearly sees how his mood didn’t match the effort she had put into the surprise.
Chalamet Was Genuinely Sorry On The Special Night
Everything changed the moment they arrived. “I got to the theater, and it was Interstellar in IMAX just for him,” Timothée recalled. Kylie had arranged a private screening of the 2014 film in which he portrayed Tom Cooper, the son of Matthew McConaughey’s character, Joseph Cooper.

As soon as he realized what she had done, he immediately felt remorseful. He remembered telling her, “Oh, I’m sorry for being so grumpy on the drive.” Then he added sincerely, “I love that movie, man.”
Timothée has seen ‘Interstellar‘ around 22 times. When it first hit theaters, he watched it 12 times on the big screen. The movie clearly holds a special place in his heart, and Kylie knew exactly how to honor that. Once he understood her thoughtful gesture, his frustration turned into gratitude.
Timothée and Kylie, who began dating in 2023, have spent the past few months showing up for each other, both privately and publicly. During one emotional speech at the Golden Globe Awards, Timothée publicly thanked his “partner of three years” for their foundation and support. “I love you. I couldn’t do this without you,” he said, expressing heartfelt appreciation.
