Todd Phillips, director of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux‘, has been facing amole flak for his latest film that crashed badly at the box office. However, he seems to be in good spirits still, as he is now giving viewers one simple solution for a seamless theatre experience.
Speaking to ‘Empire‘ magazine, Phillips made it clear that he believes ads before a film’s screening sap the energy from eager moviegoers. Here’s everything he said.
Todd Phillips Reveals His Dislike For Commercial Ads
Todd Phillips has shelled out the one way to enhance people’s movie theater experience: ditch the commercials. The director held no bars as he spoke against the commercial ads culture.
“We’ve paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there. The commercials tend to take the air out of the room,” the multi-Oscar nominee said, referring to those pesky ads that run before the much-anticipated trailers.

While Phillips’ suggestion to cut commercials may resonate with many, other filmmakers weighed in with their own thoughts on the industry’s evolving landscape.
As such, director Sean Baker believes the industry is getting far away from streaming, increasingly leaning towards digital cinematography; thus, making movies even less “hand-made.”
On the bright side, however, it seems like Paul Feig of ‘Freaks and Geeks‘ gave high marks to streaming channels, for being brave in playing a part in keeping this fast-paced industry from turning out too stale in changing times.
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Crashes At Box Office, But Some Laud It
Meanwhile, Todd Phillips’ latest production ‘Joker: Folie à Deux‘ hasn’t exactly had it easy. Warner Bros. spent a whoppin’ $200 million to make the picture, but it tanked at the box office. Critics were not kind; neither were audiences, making the film a serious loss-maker.
Director Paul Schrader took his anger to a whole new level, saying he walked out of the theater mid-picture to go shopping and that the film was “a really bad musical.”

But not everyone shares the same optimism. In fact, renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino comes in as quite a cheerleader for the film. Phillips, by his count, has unleashed a ballsy “middle finger” at Hollywood–and its customers.
Whatever the outcome on that specific front, there is also evidence to indicate that in other respects Phillips’ second directorial feature is really stirring the waters.
