The 80s heartthrob, Winona Ryder, was once a celebrated actress who had a very successful professional and personal life. She debuted in the Charlie Sheen-starrer ‘Lucas’ in 1986. But it was 1988’s ‘Bettlejuice’ by Tim Burton that gave her wide recognition. Later, she starred in a film with her ex-fiancé Johnny Depp in ‘Edward Scissorhands.’ She received several accolades for Martin Scorsese’s 1991 film ‘The Age of Innocence.’
However, at the beginning of the new millennium, the actress somehow disappeared from Hollywood. The reason for her decline was an infamous shoplifting case in 2001. That case unveiled the hypocrisy that Hollywood has petted for a long time. Due to the case, the industry started ousting the actress for a mere shoplifting incident, for which she served the period. The actress herself has revealed what really happened to her after the case.

Winona Ryder Did Not Think That Her Case Was The Crime Of The Century
Winona Ryder’s image in Hollywood was distorted due to one act of crime. The actress was convicted of shoplifting at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills in December 2001. Ryder had to pay a fine of $2,700 for shoplifting commodities worth $5,000. She served 480 hours of community service with three years of supervised probation.
In an interview with Porter magazine, she reflected on the perception of the people after the conviction. The ‘Little Women’ actress said, “Psychologically, I must have been at a place where I just wanted to stop. I won’t get into what happened, but it wasn’t what people think. And it wasn’t like the crime of the century! But it allowed me time that I really needed, where I went back to San Francisco and got back into things that… I just had other interests, frankly.”

The Actress Deems The Period An ‘Awakening’
The criminal act hampered Winona Ryder’s image as a star, and she started appearing in fewer and fewer movies. Winona lost crucial roles like Woody Allen’s ‘Melinda and Melinda.’ However, after the whole incident, Ryder is resurrecting her career.
After the whole hullabaloo in the 2000s decade, she started getting roles in television and some acclaimed films. From ‘Black Swan’ to ‘Stranger Things,’ she has proved her mettle again.
In the interview, Winona Ryder continued, “A lot of people had the perception that I just disappeared in the 2000s. And I did, but only from that world. I appeared elsewhere, I promise you. I was transformed into doing stuff I really wanted to do – it was a great awakening. It just wasn’t in the public eye.”
