Can ‘Blue Beetle’ End DC’s Dry Run At The Box Office With Its Positive Reviews?

Blue Beetle‘ will finally be the redemption that DCU has strived for after an embarrassing run with the recent releases. With ‘Black Adam’, ‘Shazam 2’, and ‘The Flash‘ underperforming, DC movies are under a lot of scrutiny. Due to past failures and the entire upcoming universe being rebooted, the DC fans feared where exactly will ‘Blue Beetle’ stand.

However, the early reviews of the film are out and fortunately, it seems as though things are shaping up well for DC Studios. The latest DC movie is marked as the first live-action superhero film with a Latino lead which established a solid foundation for the ‘Cobra Kai’ star, Xolo Maridueña.

Blue Beetle Receives Positive Reviews From Critics

The early release of the film saw numerous positive responses from critics. ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis called the movie “mostly a blast” and praised George Lopez’s acting and the useful super suit. Collider’s Steven Weintraub praised Lopez for incorporating Latino culture and family values into the narrative. According to Griffin Schiller of Film Speak, “Blue Beetle is a MASSIVE win for DC”, and praised Xolo Maridueña for his work.

‘Blue Beetle’ has an impressive 83% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is quite a lot above ‘The Flash’ and ‘Shazam 2’s underwhelming scores of 64% and 49%, respectively. Apart from all the positive reviews, the new film also suffers from another common superhero issue with its underdeveloped and bland villain.

‘Blue Beetle’s box office predictions say that the movie will approximately earn $12-17 million in its domestic opening weekend, ultimately setting at $27-55 million domestically. These projections by Box Office Pro are based on strengths like the DC brand having a “modest strength” and the relatively unknown hero appearing “fresh” to audiences.

The film should avoid following the footsteps of the last three DCEU films, which will also save Warner Bros from a financial loss. The production budget of ‘Blue Beetle’ is reportedly around $120 million including additional marketing expenses. The movie would need to achieve a substantial box office performance of at least $250 million, and possibly even $300 million, just to break even without any profit. Although ‘Blue Beetle’ benefits from a lower budget compared to ‘Black Adam and ‘The Flash’, it still faces the challenge of outperforming the latter to reach the break-even point.
