Colin Farrell, known for his intense and often dark roles, recently revealed how he coped with the demanding nature of playing the iconic DC Comics villain, ‘The Penguin‘. To escape the darkness of the character, the actor had to resort to kids films.
As his solution to the problem, Farrell turned to the heartwarming and lighthearted world of Pixar films. The actor, while talking to AVnews, revealed that after a long day of filming, he would watch ‘Toy Story’ to go back to his normal self.
‘Toy Story’ Was Colin Farrell’s Escape From ‘The Penguin’
During the filming of DC’s ‘The Penguin‘, Colin Farrell would often retreat to a specially constructed “igloo” on set. This corner on set provided a much-needed respite from the intense makeup process and the demanding hours of filming. In the igloo, Farrell would relax by watching Pixar movies.
“I watched ‘Toy Story’, I was watching them all at the end of the working day for ‘The Penguin’ just for something light & beautiful” he stated. He further stated that he would leave messages for his children in the voice of The Penguin. “I‘m sure they liked the first one but then, ‘Here it is again?’” he stated.
While his children may have grown tired of the Penguin impersonations, Farrell found the exercise to be a helpful way to maintain his sanity and stay focused on the role. As he explained, “I did that to just keep myself going and stave off the boredom.”
Moreover, to maintain his mental well-being, Farrell made a conscious effort to avoid dark or intense material during his downtime. He found that watching Pixar films provided a much-needed escape from the darkness of ‘The Penguin’.

In addition to the dark nature of the character, the makeup process for ‘The Penguin’ was another significant challenge for actor Colin Farrell. He also asserted that the transformation from ‘The Penguin’ back to himself was a liberating and cathartic experience for the actor.
