DCU Heads James Gunn And David Zaslav Confirm Batman And Wonder Woman Projects Are In Motion

The new DC Universe has officially launched with ‘Superman‘ already in theaters, and now fans are eager to learn what’s next for the other two legs of the trinity, Batman and Wonder Woman

Thanks to recent updates from DC Studios co-head James Gunn and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, there’s plenty of reason for excitement, even if the wait continues.

In an interview with The New York Times, David Zaslav laid out his vision for the DC Universe. He praised James Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran for their thoughtful leadership and strategic planning. According to Zaslav, the DC brand was “underdeveloped” before the current team stepped in. Now, with a carefully structured 10-year plan in place, there’s fresh energy fueling the franchise.

Zaslav confirmed that work is actively underway on new Wonder Woman and Batman films. “Supergirl has already been shot. They’re working on Wonder Woman. They’re working on Batman,” he stated. Gunn, meanwhile, took a more grounded approach during a separate conversation with Urbana Play. While not revealing specific release dates, he made one thing clear: quality will not be rushed.

It’s not gonna be till the script is ready,” Gunn emphasized. “Both of the scripts are being written now, and if they’re good, then we’ll go to production immediately. So, it really depends on how we can get the scripts done.” His refusal to greenlight production without an “amazing” script speaks volumes. “I’d rather wait a year than go too soon,” he said.

Batman and Wonder Woman aren’t just iconic characters; they are pillars of the DC Universe. James Gunn seems to understand this intimately. The upcoming Batman reboot, titled ‘The Brave and The Bold’, will introduce a fully-formed Dark Knight who is not alone in his crime-fighting journey. On the Wonder Woman front, while details remain sparse, there is a promising parallel project in motion: ‘Paradise Lost’, a Max TV series that will explore Themyscira and its history.

While James Gunn and Zaslav are reshaping the core DCU, Matt Reeves continues to expand his separate Bat-universe with ‘The Batman Part II’ and the Emmy-nominated HBO spinoff ‘The Penguin’. Colin Farrell, who played Oz, revealed he hasn’t yet read the full script for ‘The Batman II’, but he’s close. “I can’t wait,” he said. “I’m going to have to block out a few hours when that happens, put the kettle on, and really pay attention.”

Farrell’s excitement isn’t without reason. His performance in The Penguin has already earned acclaim. Speaking to Deadline, he noted how the inclusion of family dynamics gave depth and humanity to Oz’s arc. “Anytime you drop a family member into a son’s story, you humanize that character instantly,” he reflected. While there’s no confirmation yet of a second season for ‘The Penguin’, Farrell confirmed there have been discussions.

Meanwhile, James Gunn himself has already read the script for ‘The Batman II‘ and declared it “great” in a July 7 social media post. For fans, this endorsement, paired with Farrell’s enthusiasm, is reason enough to be hopeful that Reeves’ Batman saga will only get better. As James Gunn said, “These characters deserve the best.” And finally, it seems like that’s exactly what they’re going to get.
