DCU’s Green Lantern Mythology Is Already Expanding Faster Than Expected

In Short
  • The DC Universe is rapidly expanding its Green Lantern mythology under James Gunn's creative direction.
  • The upcoming series 'Lanterns' will focus on Hal Jordan mentoring John Stewart, establishing a broader narrative.
  • The introduction of characters like Guy Gardner and Sinestro indicates a significant role for Green Lanterns in the DCU's future.

The new DC Universe is only in its beginning, yet one of the segments of the franchise is already growing at a very fast pace: the legendary Green Lantern Corps.

The Corps has always been one of the most ambitious ideas in DC. Now, finally, with the creative direction of James Gunn, that mythology is being incorporated into the DCU.

New DCU Is Setting Up A Much Bigger Green Lantern Story

Although viewers already got a glimpse of the Corps, ‘Lanterns’ is likely to delve into their role completely. Interestingly, the show is not only introducing a single hero, but it is slowly creating a whole corner of the universe with Lanterns, allies, and even future enemies.

And based on the characters that have already been confirmed, the DCU is setting the stage for something far bigger than a single series. Two legendary Corpsmen, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, will be at the heart of ‘Lanterns’. The series is said to be based on Hal as an experienced member of the cosmic police force who is to mentor John, a new officer who is only starting to realize the power and responsibility of the ring.

Kyle Chandler will play Hal, and Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart. Their collaboration is likely to be the backbone of the series, which is said to blend superhero spectacle with a down-to-earth mystery set in rural America. However, they will not be the only Lanterns that will influence the future of the DCU.

Already, fans have been introduced to the brash and unpredictable Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, who first appeared in the DCU in Superman. His arrogant character and flashy display of the power ring instantly distinguished him. It also suggested that not all ‘Lanterns’ are as composed and professional in their work.

‘Lanterns’ May Be Key To DCU’s Cosmic Future

In addition to its core heroes, the DCU is also laying the groundwork for more Green Lantern mythology. The next series will bring Sinestro, the notorious ex-Lantern and an enemy, portrayed by Ulrich Thomsen.

The comics show that Sinestro later on loses his status and succeeds in creating his own strong group. This makes him one of the most powerful villains in DC.

It is also foreshadowed that the DCU can adopt some of the more esoteric Lantern lore. One of the lines in the ‘Lanterns’ trailer even mentions a squirrel-like Lantern, a probable allusion to Ch’p, an alien hero whose appearance has been one of the most surprising aspects of the franchise.

Combined, these characters imply that the DCU is not using the Green Lantern mythos as a side story. Instead, it is turning out to be one of the major pillars of the universe.
