The DC Universe is possibly leading to another high-stakes Superman confrontation. Yet, one of the most interesting changes in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ has wings and a mace. Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl is officially coming back in the 2027 sequel, and her appearance may be an indication of something far more important than a mere supporting role.
Up to this point, information regarding ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is shrouded in secrecy. We are aware that David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor will face a bigger looming threat, which is highly speculated to be Brainiac. However, beyond the headline rivalry, the return of Kendra Saunders hints that the DCU is ready to widen its mythological lens.
Hawkgirl’s Return Signals Bigger Plans For The DC Universe

Merced was first introduced in ‘Superman’ as Hawkgirl in the Justice Gang. She had little screen time but still made a strong impression. She was fierce, confident, and visually striking. Her appearance in a short follow-up in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 solidified her role in the expanding DCU, although it did not delve into her character as much. That may be about to change.

The comic-book history of Hawkgirl is one of the most convoluted in DC history. Kendra Saunders is bound to a cycle of reincarnation that is very old and is frequently associated with Thanagar, a highly developed alien civilization that has its own warrior culture. She is, literally speaking, a hero reincarnated over the centuries. Should ‘Man of Tomorrow’ indulge in that mythology, particularly with a cosmic villain like Brainiac in the mix, Hawkgirl could become central to the story rather than orbiting around it.
DCU’s Next Breakout Hero Might Be Hawkgirl

Interestingly, other members of the Justice Gang seem to have different futures. Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern is already set to be the ‘Lanterns‘ series, and Mister Terrific has been speculated to have a greater role elsewhere. That puts ‘Man of Tomorrow’ in a unique position to further develop Hawkgirl. And honestly? It feels earned. Merced’s performance made it clear that Hawkgirl isn’t a one-off character.

Providing her with a more prominent narrative role would balance the ensemble. It would also allow the DCU to not make Superman’s world seem too isolated. ‘Man of Tomorrow’, which will be released on July 9, 2027, is already becoming more than a superhero movie. When done properly, it could make Hawkgirl a pillar of the new universe, not a sidekick, but a legend herself.
