Starting off as the second Robin alongside Batman, Jason Todd has had quite the transformation over the years in the DC comics universe by taking up the mantle of the dangerous anti-hero Red Hood. But how exactly did this former sidekick of the Caped Crusader become one of Gotham’s most notorious and complicated figures?
As Robin, Jason worked closely with Batman fighting crime in Gotham city. However, compared to Dick Grayson, he was hot-headed and impulsive. This led to clashes between him and the Dark Knight. During one confrontation, Jason sought to find his long-lost mother and was captured by Batman’s greatest foe, the Joker. This event would be the beginning of Jason’s transformation to becoming the Red Hood.
Jason Todd’s Return And Rebirth As Redhood
After his abduction by Joker, Jason Todd was brutally tortured and beaten up with a crowbar before leaving him trapped in a warehouse with a bomb. Despite Batman’s efforts, he was too late to save Jason from the explosion that followed, or so he thought.
His apparent death at the hands of Joker left a deep impact on both Batman and the larger Bat-family. Batman was overcome with grief and guilt for failing to save his beloved sidekick and partner in time.

However, Jason would eventually find new life — thanks to the Lazarus Pit. Discovered by the League of Assassins, the magical waters of the Pit had the ability to restore the dead back to life.
Jason, now revived, was driven mad by this process and furious with Batman for not avenging his death by killing the Joker. Blaming Batman’s no-killing rule for allowing his nemesis to live, Jason underwent rigorous training to master hand-to-hand combat and even weaponry.
He would then adopt the title of Red Hood, returning to Gotham to kill criminals that Batman wouldn’t.
How Jason Todd Implements His Brand Of Justice Independent Of The Batman
As the Red Hood, Jason Todd’s topmost priority was to go against the man who had murdered him, the Joker. Pushed by a fierce thirst for vengeance, Red Hood tracked down his abductor.
However, when finally given the chance to end the Joker, Red Hood found he could not shoot him in cold blood. Instead, he beat the clown severely as payback for what he had done to him but did not kill him. This showed that despite his transformation into the lethal Red Hood, the humanity that remained in Jason was not willing to cross that line.

Now relying on weapons and a willingness to kill, which goes against Batman’s ideologies, he fights to establish his own brand of swift justice in Gotham, independent of the Caped Crusader.
