“It’s Nonsense”: James Gunn Dismisses Rumors Of ‘The Batman 2’ Being Scrapped

With the internet abuzz once again about James Gunn allegedly plotting to dismantle ‘The Batman‘ franchise, the filmmaker has stepped in to squash the speculation. Gunn, now co-head of DC Studios, reiterated his support for director Matt Reeves.

He further emphasized that ‘The Batman’ remains a cornerstone of DC’s plans moving forward. Ever since Robert Pattinson‘s escapade as Batman, fans have questioned what the future holds for Reeves’ gritty, noir-inspired version of the Caped Crusader.

The idea of two concurrent Batmen has sparked curiosity and confusion among fans. Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of the Dark Knight was steeped in psychological realism and set in a standalone continuity. Moreover, Gunn’s ‘The Brave and the Bold’ is expected to present a fresh interpretation of Batman.

It’s teased to focus on his relationship with his son, Damian Wayne, the ten-year-old assassin-turned-Robin. This dual approach has raised questions about how both characters can thrive without overshadowing each other. Gunn, however, appears confident in their coexistence.

He has repeatedly voiced his admiration for Reeves and dismissed any plans to shelve the Batman franchise. “It’s just nonsense,” Gunn said in a recent Threads post. “I’ve been one of Matt’s biggest cheerleaders for years, since Cloverfield and the Apes movies. We’re eagerly awaiting his script for The Batman Part II.

Additionally, DC Studios has become more involved with Reeves’ universe with ‘The Penguin’. Gunn also expressed frustration with online speculation. “Like, why would you even believe a rando on social networking?” he questioned. “Of course not. If it was canceled, it would be canceled. Who has time for charades?”

James Gunn also used the opportunity to outline his philosophy for DC Studios. He emphasized that quality storytelling will always take precedence over rushed timelines. This approach is shaping the development of multiple projects within the DCU. This includes ‘The Brave and the Bold’, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, and ‘Lanterns’.

The one thing I’ve tried to make clear from the beginning,” Gunn explained, “is that everything at DC is going to be based on the writers. Until we have a screenplay that I’m totally happy with, that movie is not going to get made, no matter what it is.

Moreover, he highlighted recent successes with scripts for projects like ‘Supergirl’ and the ‘Lanterns’ TV series. He described them as “wonderful work” and praised the writers’ dedication. Gunn also hinted at additional projects in the pipeline, some already greenlit or close to approval.

Moreover, he emphasized that a strong script will determine when, and if, it moves forward. “As soon as The Brave and the Bold reaches that point, we’ll make the movie,” he affirmed.

Despite the rumors, Gunn’s statements make one thing clear: ‘The Batman Part II’ is moving forward, with a release date set for October 2, 2026.
