Contrary to all expectations, superhero fatigue does exist. It’s not a popular sentiment, but the underwhelming response to recent DC and MCU movies tells a different tale. James Gunn gave his two cents on why the audience’s interest in watching spandex-clad people fight aliens is slowly dying.
While the DC chief has acknowledged the existence of this fatigue, he doesn’t blame it on the superheroes. He says things have become challenging for Marvel since ‘Avengers: Endgame.‘ Fans would agree since anything Marvel has made in their Phase 4 hasn’t had the same ring of its early days.

James Gunn Wants Superhero Films To Do Better
James Gunn bears his old bosses no evil will. In his recent interview with Rolling Stones, he said he wants both studios to keep churning out great content. At the same time, he believes it’s complicated. Since ‘The Blip,‘ constantly making good movies has become “really hard.” He acknowledges that “there is such a thing” as superhero fatigue caused by generic ways of storytelling.
“It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character. We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they’re these incredible characters that we have in our hearts. And if it becomes just a bunch of nonsense onscreen, it gets really boring. But I get fatigued by most spectacle films, by the grind of not having an emotionally grounded story,” said Gunn.

James Gunn Learned From His ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Experiences
James Gunn spoke to the publication about his upcoming projects. Before he pivoted to the DC, he wrote and directed the third and final ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy‘ film for Marvel. Now a studio head, he focuses on bringing top-tier talent to the forefront. If that wasn’t busying him enough, he also took it upon himself to write and direct ‘Superman: Legacy.’
Making the ‘Guardians’ franchise for Marvel taught him a great deal. He hopes to bring that experience to his ‘Superman‘ movie. However, his ‘Superman‘ will be a vastly different movie in terms of tone and aesthetic. Gunn said, “I learned so much from making these [Guardians] movies. But it’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It’s actually quite different.”
