The speculation surrounding the next installment of the DC cinematic universe is on the rise. However, James Gunn is not letting misinformation pass. Recent news indicated that some of the up-and-coming stars were auditioning to play a key part in the next ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’, possibly as the mighty DC superhero Maxima.
But Gunn has now intervened to set the record straight, and his answer is uncompromising.
James Gunn Pushes Back On Major ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Casting Leak

It was first reported that Ella Purnell, Adria Arjona, and Marisa Abela had auditioned to play the role of Maxima, a ruthless and powerful character in DC Comics history. The rumor spread rapidly, particularly with the excitement of fans to see Maxima in live-action being first realized. However, Gunn wasn’t having it.

On social media, the DC Studios co-head simply dismissed the report. He labeled it as wrong and shared that he was disappointed in the manner in which the information was reported. “This is not against Nexus – they’re sharing what Deadline reported – but Deadline’s reporting is shoddy & incorrect. I’ve always thought Deadline was pretty thorough in their journalism, but that’s not the case here, so I’m frankly disappointed.“
He even explained his own relationships; he said that he had worked with Arjona in the past, but that he had not seen the other actors. It is a unique occasion when a studio head literally resists, and it speaks volumes about how closely Gunn wants to control the narrative about the future of the DCU. It does not necessarily imply that Maxima is not part of the plan; it just means that fans should be more careful about what they think in the meantime.
The Bigger Picture For Superman’s Sequel

While the casting chatter may be shaky, the ambition behind ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is anything but. The movie will be a continuation of the ‘Superman‘ film, which stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult. Interestingly, the sequel is supposed to delve into a situation where these two iconic rivals are compelled to be in an awkward alliance.

And they will not be confronting any threat. Brainiac is also said to be the main villain of the movie, a villain whose size and intellect might challenge Superman to his utmost. The returning cast is even heavier, as Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. It also has an increasing connective tissue over the DCU. This includes Aaron Pierre in his big-screen debut as John Stewart after his introduction in Lanterns on HBO.
So, what about Maxima? Although casting rumors may have been off the mark, the character still feels like a natural fit in this changing universe. She is someone who might be able to rival Superman. Whether she will be featured in this movie or not, one thing is evident: Gunn is constructing something, and he does not want to have leaks narrate his story. So, fans can only wait.
