The DC Universe is still in its early days under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership, and while ‘Superman’ kicked off the new cinematic era in 2025, fans are eager to know where other iconic heroes fit into this reimagined timeline, especially Wonder Woman and The Flash.
With Gal Gadot and Ezra Miller having brought the characters to life, speculation about their DCU status has been ongoing. Now, Gunn himself has given a candid update. However, his remarks might leave more questions than answers. And if that wasn’t enough, he also cleared one of the biggest ‘The Batman Part II’ rumors.
Wonder Woman And The Flash Are Still Stuck In The New DCU’s Development Hell

Appearing on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, James Gunn revealed that he isn’t entirely sure how Wonder Woman and The Flash fit into the DCU right now. “Yeah, are they canon? I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see. I mean, they’ll exist eventually. Whether they exist now, I don’t know,” he admitted. His remarks underscore just how much of the DCU’s larger backstory is still being worked out. Gunn has said before that certain elements, like ‘The Flash’s place in the universe, were “on hold.”

This was because Ezra Miller’s 2023 solo movie underperformed at the box office. On the other hand, Wonder Woman’s return seems more concrete. DC has reportedly made her next solo movie a priority, with ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ screenwriter Ana Nogueira penning the script.
When it comes to the in-universe timeline, things get more complicated. Gunn’s Superman established that the Man of Steel has been active for about three years in the DCU, with the “Justice Gang” already operating. If Batman is meant to be around the same age as Superman, and the same applies to Wonder Woman and The Flash, then they could have been heroes for at least that same time frame.
However, Gunn also left the door open for something bigger. In ‘Superman’, it’s revealed that metahumans have been active for 300 years. This means Wonder Woman, depending on how Gunn writes her origin, could have been active far longer than Superman. For The Flash, it’s anyone’s guess. There’s no confirmed project on DC’s film slate for him yet.
James Gunn Dismisses ‘The Batman Part II’ Robin Casting Rumors

While Gunn is busy shaping the future of the DCU, he’s also become the internet’s go-to source for debunking superhero rumors. Ever since Robert Pattinson’s return was confirmed for ‘The Batman Part II’, speculation about which DC characters might appear in Matt Reeves’ sequel has exploded online. One rumor in particular gained traction: that Robin, Batman’s famous sidekick, would be introduced in the film.

However, according to Gunn? That’s pure fiction. After a DC fan site posted a “scoop” claiming Robin would appear, and that the sequel would retain the dark, gritty tone of the first movie, Gunn took to Threads to call it out. “Guys, please stop believing this nonsense. I think six of us have read the script. No one knows anything about The Batman 2,” he stated.
The fan site has since deleted the post, but not before Gunn made it clear that only a small, select group has actually read the script. In another now-deleted exchange from months earlier, Gunn had similarly warned: “Anything you’ve heard about that movie is made up or a guess. No one in the world knows anything about the concept for the story except four people.”
