James Gunn Has Big Plans For David Corenswet’s ‘Superman’ Future

The Man of Steel is soaring higher than ever, and James Gunn isn’t slowing down. Following the record-breaking success of 2025’s ‘Superman’, the DC Studios co-CEO has revealed that the next chapter of the “Superman Saga” is already well on its way.

Additionally, by calling this new chapter the “Superman Saga,” Gunn signals that he is thinking far beyond one film at a time. The DCU seems committed to building a rich narrative for its most iconic hero.

In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn confirmed that he has completed the “very, very worked out” treatment for the next installment and is optimistic about starting production soon. “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman Saga,” Gunn shared. “I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”

This is a significant update for fans who have been buzzing ever since Superman’s post-credits scene teased a larger Super-Family storyline. With Milly Alcock’s Supergirl movie set for a 2026 release, the pieces are clearly falling into place for an interconnected Kryptonian legacy within the DCU. Gunn’s deliberate use of the phrase “Superman Saga” signals something more ambitious than just another sequel. These words hint at a long-term, multi-film arc that could define this era of the DC Universe.

Industry insiders are already speculating that the untitled follow-up could hit theaters in 2027. Given Gunn’s comments, filming may begin as early as 2026, with casting news possibly surfacing by fall next year. Considering how well ‘Superman’ has been received, it’s no surprise that DC Studios is prioritizing the project. The next chapter could very well be a team-up film featuring David Corenswet’s Superman alongside Alcock’s Supergirl.

James Gunn has confirmed that ‘Superman’ will make its digital debut on Friday, August 15, 2025, just 35 days after its theatrical release. This is an exciting turn for fans eager to revisit the film, or for those who couldn’t catch it in theaters. The timing is strategic. Despite some thinking it’s a quick turnaround, the film has already had an impressive run at the box office. Domestically, it has earned a staggering $331.3 million, making it the highest-grossing ‘Superman‘ film ever in the U.S. Internationally.

The film has pulled in $247.8 million, bringing the global total to an impressive $579.1 million. For a character that’s been around for over 85 years, this new iteration proves Superman is still one of Hollywood’s most beloved heroes. Warner Bros. Discovery has also announced that the film will be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD starting September 23, 2025, from both online and physical retailers.

This physical release will allow fans to not only own the film but also potentially enjoy bonus features. This will include behind-the-scenes insights and commentary. The digital release, however, remains the quickest way for audiences to experience the Man of Steel’s triumphant return. One question remains unanswered: When will Superman land on HBO Max? Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t confirmed the streaming date yet, and for now, the focus is clearly on maximizing digital and physical sales.
