James Gunn Praises ‘The Batman Part II’ Final Script, Reveals Details Fans Have Been Waiting For

After months of speculation and delays, ‘The Batman Part II’ finally seems to be moving ahead. This is thanks to an encouraging update from none other than DC Studios co-head James Gunn

During the red carpet event for his upcoming ‘Superman‘ film, Gunn was asked by ScreenRant if he had read the long-awaited script for ‘The Batman Part II’. While not much, his response did reignite fans’ hopes.

When asked about ‘The Batman Part II’s script, James Gunn simply stated, “It’s great!”, followed by a knowing smile. While he kept his words brief, the impact was anything but small. His comment instantly lit up fan circles who have been anxiously awaiting updates on the Matt Reeves-directed sequel to the critically acclaimed ‘The Batman’.

The first film, starring Robert Pattinson, delivered a gritty noir take on Gotham’s caped crusader and became a breakout success, both commercially and critically. Yet its sequel has been plagued by delays and scheduling issues that left its future uncertain for a time. However, this small moment of affirmation from Gunn changes that. Moreover, it doesn’t just imply that the script is finished; it confirms that it’s good.

And in the ever-complicated landscape of the DC franchise, that matters a lot. Gunn has previously emphasized the importance of strong scripts before any film moves into production. He’s not just ticking boxes; he’s focused on rebuilding DC with a clear creative vision. So, for him to give a glowing review to a project that isn’t even part of the mainline DC Universe is a powerful sign.

The Batman Part II’ may not exist within the same canon as ‘Superman’ or ‘The Brave and the Bold’. However, that’s not stopping Gunn from supporting it wholeheartedly. With filming expected to begin later this year and an official release date set for October 1, 2027, fans can be ready for the next chapter of this darker Gotham saga.

In another major DCU update, James Gunn also teased the eventual team-up of the iconic DC Trinity: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. While speaking to Deadline, he was asked if fans can expect to see the holy trinity of DC heroes unite in the near future. “Of course, yeah! But, not in the next movie,” Gunn said. The confirmation isn’t surprising, but it’s certainly exciting.

After the shaky execution of the Justice League in the DCEU era, many fans have been cautiously optimistic about how the new DCU will handle crossovers. Gunn’s confirmation suggests that a team-up is definitely on the roadmap. However, this time it will be earned, not rushed. For now, the universe begins with ‘Superman’, directed by Gunn himself and starring David Corenswet.

The film has already generated $10 million in pre-sales. Additionally, it is tracking for a massive opening weekend between $95 million and $135 million. Meanwhile, Batman will be introduced into the DCU through ‘The Brave and the Bold’, which is still in development. Wonder Woman’s standalone film is also on the way, with strong rumors surrounding potential casting choices.

Gunn recently praised Brandon Sklenar for his role in 1923 and called Adria Arjona “a great Wonder Woman,” fueling speculation that these two could be next in line for the roles. However, for now, Gunn insists the focus is on building these characters individually. He believes, “It’s about telling great stories first”. That philosophy is already resonating with fans who grew tired of previous DC films rushing toward big ensemble movies.
