James Gunn Removed A Controversial Krypto Scene After Negative Feedback During Test Screening Of ‘Superman’

The countdown is almost over, James Gunn’s ‘Superman‘ movie is set to fly into theaters next week, bringing with it a fresh start for the DC Universe. However, before the Man of Steel even makes his official return, the film has already sparked conversation.

According to cast members María Gabriela de Faría and Sara Sampaio, the film originally included a controversial scene involving Krypto the Superdog that was ultimately cut after poor reactions during test screenings.

While this decision may disappoint some fans who enjoy darker, edgier moments, many are relieved. This speaks volumes about how DC is trying to fine-tune the balance between intensity and emotional resonance. In a recent interview with Jake’s Takes, María Gabriela de Faría (playing The Engineer) and Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) revealed that a particularly intense scene was removed from the final cut.

The scene captured Ultraman punching Krypto. That’s right. DC’s new cinematic villain struck Superman’s beloved canine companion, and unsurprisingly, audiences weren’t having it. Sampaio admitted, “They actually cut a worse scene… Me and Nick were a little bit pissed about it, but it’s okay.” She went on to explain that the scene in question tested poorly, with one audience member even audibly reacting, “Oh, hell no.”

De Faría clarified the dynamic, adding with a smile, “I did not punch the dog. The dog attacked me first.” But regardless of who threw the first paw or punch, the reaction was clear: fans have limits, and hurting animals is one of them. And honestly, that makes sense. Even James Gunn, known for edgy content, has handled animal-centered storylines with depth.

Just look at Rocket Raccoon’s emotional arc in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’. So, cutting the scene doesn’t feel like a step back; it feels like a necessary course correction. The good news? Krypto is still very much in the movie and will participate in several action sequences. This adorable, super-powered pup isn’t going anywhere.

‘Superman’ Actor Wendell Pierce Might’ve Confirmed A Sequel

While the dust settles on the Krypto controversy, another story has quietly been gaining traction. In an interview with Collider, actor Wendell Pierce (who plays Perry White) may have accidentally confirmed what many fans were hoping: a ‘Superman’ sequel could already be in the works. When asked whether he took anything from the set, Pierce responded, “It’s a hot set, you don’t want to mess it up because, you know, the sequel is, never mind.”

Naturally, this quick pause and walk-back had fans doing double-takes. Was it just a joke? Possibly. However, it lines up with earlier comments made by James Gunn, who has hinted that he’s already developing something for ‘Superman’ post-release. In a separate interview, Gunn was asked directly if he was planning a sequel. His response? “Yes, yes, yes… But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.

I always say I’m going to direct something until I finish the script. But it’s probably what I will direct. Yes, probably,” he continued. This would explain Gunn’s reluctance to call it a direct sequel. It may not be ‘Superman 2’, but it could be the next big DCU chapter featuring Clark Kent. If true, this is a strong vote of confidence in both Gunn’s vision and the film’s early reception.
