Jason Momoa is officially returning to the DC universe, only this time, he is exchanging Atlantean royalty for chaos, attitude, and pure mayhem. As ‘Supergirl’ prepares to bring Momoa on board as Lobo, the actor is taking on a much different type of comic book character.
And this character does not seem like an extension of a legacy, but rather a radical redefinition. Even though fans are already speculating about whether Lobo might be the star of his own project, Momoa is keeping his expectations in check, making it clear that nothing beyond Supergirl is guaranteed just yet.
Jason Momoa Says Lobo’s DCU Future Depends On One Big Thing

Momoa has openly discussed the difference in his new DC role from his tenure as Aquaman in the DCEU. At that time, he says, a lot of the long-term plan was already in existence. Zack Snyder had a well-defined arc, and Momoa was aware of the direction that Arthur Curry was going. This time it is not the case. For Lobo’s future, Momoa claims that he only knows what is right before his eyes: Supergirl.

“I only know Lobo’s in this one, and so we’ll see what the future holds. I would love for his own thing to be coming out,” he shared. He also speaks respectfully about Gunn’s vision, drawing comparisons between Gunn’s world-building and what Snyder accomplished in the DCEU. “I think everyone’s going to be. James’s career is just equal to what Zack’s done, what they’ve built, and what their worlds are. They’re amazing directors world building.”
In Momoa’s eyes, both filmmakers are architects of ambitious cinematic universes, just with very different tones. Rather, Momoa reckons that the future of the character will be largely reliant on the response of the audience.
Both directors are creators of grandiose film worlds, albeit with entirely different shades, in the eyes of Momoa. That uncertainty doesn’t sound frustrating, though. If anything, Momoa seems energized by it.
“A Pinch Me Moment”: Why Lobo Means So Much to Momoa

What’s impossible to miss in Momoa’s comments is just how excited he is to play Lobo. He describes stepping into the role as a “pinch me moment,” implying that this was not a mere superhero job, but one that he actually desired.
Momoa even jokes that his initial appearance as Lobo is especially rough, referring to it as gnarly and physically taxing. He is proud of the challenge, confident that the performance pushes him in a way few roles have.

It feels like Lobo allows Momoa to be more unfiltered and raw than Aquaman ever was. That is the only reason why Lobo is an interesting addition to the new DCU. The character lives on chaos, violence, and dark humor, all of which might easily enable him to appear in various projects as an unpredictable partner or a threat.
Although DC Studios has not stated any intentions after ‘Supergirl’, it is evident that the door is open.
