‘Lanterns’ Trailer Hints Hal Jordan Might Not Survive DCU’s First Green Lantern Story

In Short
  • A new trailer for HBO's 'Lanterns' suggests Hal Jordan's fate may be tragic.
  • Hal Jordan and John Stewart's relationship could lead to a significant legacy shift.
  • Hal's potential death may elevate John Stewart's character and emotional journey.

A newly released trailer for HBO’s upcoming DC series ‘Lanterns‘ has sparked major speculation among fans, and one line in particular suggests the show could begin with a heartbreaking turning point for one of DC’s most iconic heroes.

The show, which will bring the Green Lantern Corps to the live-action DC Universe, will pair veteran Lantern Hal Jordan with newcomer John Stewart. However, the recent video suggests that their relationship might not be as long-lasting as the fans want it to be. Rather, the trailer silently preconditions the fact that Hal’s story might have an earlier end than it was supposed to have.

The largest hint is in one of the tense dialogues between the two Green Lanterns. Hal is sure that he will be a Green Lantern as long as he lives, which means that he is not planning to retire. A few seconds later, John retaliates with a very mean yet accurate reply: “You are old. You’re tired. And your time is up.” It is the type of conversation that seems to be full of meaning.

The series features Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, who is an older and more experienced Lantern nearing the end of his career, and Aaron Pierre as the younger John Stewart. The fans have already theorized that the show can use Hal’s plot to hand over the torch to John, and the trailer appears to support this notion. If the hints are not accidental, the destiny of Hal might turn out to be one of the most emotional moments in the early DCU history. The Green Lantern Corps has been all about legacy, after all.

John Stewart’s Rise Could Come At A Heavy Cost

Should Hal Jordan meet a tragic end, it would automatically raise the stakes of John Stewart’s journey. Hal is generally regarded as the most renowned Green Lantern in the history of DC, and his guidance may be instrumental in molding John into the main Lantern of the universe in the future. His death would not only justify why John finally comes out into the limelight, but it would also provide the character with a strong emotional drive.

Storytelling-wise, it is the type of moment that might shape the tone of the series. Naturally, there are still a lot of fans who hope that the show will give Hal Jordan a chance to shine before any significant sacrifice is made. Since Ryan Reynolds played him in the 2011 film ‘Green Lantern’, the character has not had a lot of successful live-action chances since the film failed to establish a long-term franchise.

As ‘Lanterns’ is the first to bring the Green Lantern mythology to the TV, the audience is looking forward to seeing both heroes in the limelight. Whether Hal survives the season or becomes a fallen legend, one thing is clear: Lanterns are already teasing a story about legacy, sacrifice, and the heavy responsibility that comes with wearing the ring.
