Matt Reeves, the visionary director behind the critically acclaimed film ‘The Batman’, has revealed his plans for ‘Arkham Asylum‘. He claimed that the spin-off series centered around Arkham Asylum has undergone significant changes.
Previously, news suggested that the show was scrapped by Max. While the initial concept for the series didn’t materialize, Reeves assures fans that the ideas behind it are still very much alive and evolving.
Matt Reeves Claims The Idea For ‘Arkham Asylum’ Is Being Utilized In Other “Exciting” Ways
In an interview with EW, Reeves discussed the evolution of the Arkham Asylum project. He explained that while the original GCPD series didn’t move forward, elements from that concept were incorporated into ‘The Penguin’.

Similarly, the Arkham show as it was initially envisioned is no longer on the table. However, Reeves emphasized that the core ideas behind it are being developed in new and exciting ways. Reeves described the process as one of evolution rather than failure.
He stated, “The things that we’re talking about [now] are evolved versions of those things. It’s not like that just didn’t work. It was like, we need to evolve this. I would describe it less as something that didn’t work out and more as something that is still along a path toward arriving at its destination.”
The Evolution Of ‘The Penguin’
‘The Penguin’ serves as a prime example of how Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ universe has evolved and expanded. Additionally, the series focuses on the rise of Oswald Cobblepot, a character initially introduced as a red herring in the film.

Reeves explains that the idea for ‘The Penguin’ came about as he and HBO CEO Casey Bloys discussed the potential for expanding the Batman universe beyond the movies. Bloys encouraged Reeves to explore other iconic characters.
This prompted him to pitch a series centered around Cobblepot. Moreover, his decision marked a significant shift in the creative direction of the franchise. Additionally, the series promises to offer a deeper dive into the character of Cobblepot.
