While it’s not the worst DCU film, ‘Shazam: Fury Of The Gods‘ hasn’t succeeded at the box office. The sequel sets off Billy Batson and his foster siblings going against the daughters of Atlas to protect the earth. Most adult superhero alter-egos, except Mary Marvel, remain the same.
Ever since the trailer for the ‘Shazam‘ sequel dropped, fans have wondered what’s going on with the casting of Mary Bromfield. There seems to be a significant casting change. Michelle Borth no longer plays Adult Mary. So why DCU changed the casting of the superhero Mary?

Grace Caroline Currey Explains The Recasting Of Adult Mary
The makers of ‘Shazam: Fury Of The Gods‘ decided to cast Grace Caroline Currey as both young and adult Mary Bromfield. Earlier, Michelle Borth played the adult superhero Mary in the 2019 film ‘Shazam!‘. So why doesn’t she reprise her role in the sequel? Fret not; Grace Caroline Currey explains the decision to recast.
Grace Caroline Currey told Game Rant why she is the only cast member playing both civilian and superhero versions of her character in the film. She broke down this decision with simple logic: “It works for Mary because she’s the oldest of the foster kids, and I was already an adult when we shot the first one as well.“ Coincidentally, this decision makes Mary’s appearance comic book accurate.

Is There Going To Be A ‘Shazam’ Spin-Off Film?
‘Shazam: Fury Of The Gods‘ director David F. Sandberg is down to make a spin-off about Mary and his solo adventures. The director told Comicbook.com in a roundtable interview about his interest in exploring Mary’s story, saying, “Mary feels like sort of an obvious choice almost because she’s big, even in the old comics, Shazam! Mary and Freddy. Mary feels like a good one. I’ll always love Darla, as well, because she’s the most innocent and childlike.“
Grace Caroline Currey is equally excited to lead her solo superhero adventures. She spoke of her excitement with Popculture.com, saying, “Does someone say no to that? Are there people who would say no to that?” She had a wonderful time playing Mary in both ‘Shazam‘ movies, but it’s for her to leave the nest. She sees infinite possibilities for her character as she puts it out in the universe to manifest, “I’m in, where do we sign up? How do we make it happen?” However, with the underwhelming performance of ‘Shazam: Fury Of The Gods,’ the spin-off seems like a far cry.
