‘Supergirl’ Could Open The Door For More Female Heroes In DCU

As ‘Supergirl’ is about to become the center of attention in the expanding DC Universe, the franchise is entering a new, exciting phase.

The film, connected to the rebooted universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, represents one of the first major female-led stories of the new era.

As much as Supergirl’s arrival is a giant leap in the right direction, it also underscores a greater fact: DC has a rich history of amazing female heroes that would not be out of place headlining their own movies. A lot of these characters possess interesting abilities, rich backgrounds, and distinct tones that would add something new to the big screen. That is, Supergirl may be only the start.

One of the most compelling possibilities is Zatanna, a magician whose spells famously work by speaking words backward. She has been a long-time fan favorite due to her charisma, stage-magician look, and her ties to the mystical aspect of DC. Next, there is Black Canary, one of the most popular street-level heroes of DC.

She already possesses the visual style that is ideal in action movies with her legendary Canary Cry and martial arts prowess. Her life as a musician, which is not often addressed in superhero films, could also be the focus of a movie about her, and it might be an interesting combination of music and action.

The other notable alternative is Vixen, whose abilities enable her to use the abilities of animals with the help of the mystical energy called the Red. On screen, that idea would produce certain visually spectacular scenes as well as bring in more mythology about nature and the supernatural.

Fresh Perspectives Are A Must For New DCU To Succeed

The most thrilling aspect of these characters is that their stories might seem so different compared to the classic superhero films. Heroes like Manhunter introduce a more realistic approach, with a working professional and single mother who takes up the role of a vigilante when the justice system fails her.

Such a narrative would give an emotional depth and a sense of reality that is not often utilized in large comic-book movies.

In the meantime, younger heroes like Stargirl might bring in a feeling of hope and youthful adventure. Her interstellar rod, glowing outfit, and family-centered story would add a completely new twist to the DCU.

The fact is that DC has never been short of strong female characters. It has just been a matter of giving them the limelight they need. Should ‘Supergirl’ be a success, it might finally convince DC Studios that audiences are ready, and eager, to see more of these heroes take flight.
