The DC Universe is still in its infancy with James Gunn, and each choice counts. It would have been simple to continue to lean on the new Superman after introducing him as the face of the franchise.
However, the most recent trailer for ‘Supergirl’ indicates something much more encouraging: this universe will not have to have a single hero.
Why Superman’s Smaller Role in Supergirl Is Exactly What DC Needs

As David Corenswet is returning to play Clark Kent, it was anticipated that he would have a significant role in the story. Rather, what we have been witnessing up to this point is indicative of a far lesser role, and frankly, that is precisely what the DCU needs at the moment. Based on the trailer, Superman only has a short conversation with Kara Zor-El.

In the scene, Clark is worried about Kara always travelling off-world and her inability to locate her place. It is a brief scene. Yet, it speaks volumes. Clark has already established himself on Earth. Kara hasn’t. That is a significant contrast. It establishes the voyage of Kara as a very personal one, independent of Superman’s established identity.
And by having him spend most of his time off-screen, the movie does not follow a Superman with Supergirl scenario. Rather, Kara is left to go it alone, with threats like Krem of the Yellow Hills and the emotional burden of Krypto. Her independence provides her narrative with breathing space.
Supergirl’s Independence Could Define DCU’s Future

This artistic decision is an indication of something more than a single film. It demonstrates that DC Studios is committed to creating a universe in which several characters can stand on their own.
If all the projects were over-reliant on Superman, the whole franchise would begin to feel small, regardless of the size or the stakes.

Allowing Supergirl to have her own film sends a very strong message. This is not a universe of the most popular heroes. It is about creating a world in which new faces are equally important. And that’s a risk, but a necessary one.
Viewers will not invest in the DCU over time when all the stories revolve around the same few icons. In retreating here, Superman in fact empowers the universe instead of ruling it.
