“The Whole Thing Looks Sillier Every Day”: Michael Keaton Says He Doesn’t Care About ‘Batgirl’ Cancellation

Michael Keaton rose to fame in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s for roles in films likeBatman‘ and ‘Beetlejuice‘. Now over 70 years old, Keaton continues to take on interesting acting challenges. Most recently, he reprised his role as Batman in ‘The Flash’ as well as a role in ‘Batgirl’ by DC.

However, Warner Bros. decided to cancel the film’s planned release, much to the disappointment of its directors and fans. But when asked about the cancellation, Keaton had an unexpectedly straightforward and indifferent response. Here’s what he said.

In a recent interview with GQ, Keaton was asked directly about the fate of ‘Batgirl’ and if the cancellation was disappointing for him. “No, I didn’t care one way or another. Big, fun, nice check” Keaton replied.

He went on to say “I might have more fun with it now. It’s not like I don’t care about it, I care about it to the degree that it’s my job, you shouldn’t be a jerk. But, essentially, it’s kind of all ridiculous. That’s the great thing: It all looks silly. The whole thing looks sillier every day”.

Keaton’s nonchalant attitude towards such a high-profile project being canceled was surprising given how passionate filmmakers and fans were about the film.

While Michael Keaton himself did not express disappointment, he did voice support for the film’s directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. “I like those boys. They’re nice guys,” said Keaton.

He went on to say “I pull for them. I want them to succeed, and I think they felt very badly, and that made me feel bad.” So despite not being emotionally invested in the film’s fate, Keaton still empathized with how hard the directors had worked only to see the project scrapped at the last minute without a release.

He liked and supported the two directors as fellow creatives even if the job itself didn’t faze him much in the end.

Throughout the interview, Michael Keaton expressed that he views acting more as a fun job rather than taking it too seriously. “I might have more fun with it now,” he said in regards to his Batman roles. For Keaton at this stage in his long career, it seems he just wants to enjoy the process rather than get too wrapped up in the end results.

As one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, Keaton feels he has nothing left to prove to others. Instead, commenting on others who were too uptight, Keaton said he wished there was “more sense of mischief” in the industry and felt the whole business looks “silly” now.

For Michael Keaton, it appears acting is better enjoyed when not taken too seriously.
