Over the years, fans have positioned Zack Snyder and James Gunn as creative opposites, two filmmakers with radically different ideas about how DC can make its most iconic hero.
However, in a refreshing and surprisingly heartfelt twist, Snyder is making one thing clear: he is happy with Gunn’s Superman.
Zack Snyder Cheers On James Gunn’s New ‘Superman’ Era

While on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. Snyder was not afraid to express his enthusiasm about the 2025 movie. Instead of comparisons or competition, he was warm and enthusiastic in his tone. “James’ Superman, which is amazing and all the best to them, and I can’t wait to see the next movie, and it’s just awesome.”

It is the type of statement that seems to be a true passing of the torch, not dramatic, not defensive, but respectful. Snyder’s Superman in ‘Man of Steel’ was more of a mythic being. Gunn’s version, however, was more optimistic. And Snyder is well aware of that difference and does not fight it. Snyder was eager to point out his distinctive voice in storytelling when questioned about what Gunn adds to Superman that was special.
He called Gunn singular, someone who can make mythology and pop culture work together. “Of course, James is singular in his storytelling, in his ability to channel mythological and pop culture into what I would consider just iconic and a very particular point of view that’s both poignant and funny.” It’s high praise, especially considering how passionately Snyder’s own fanbase has defended his darker DC universe over the years.
Why Snyder Supports DC’s Reboot

Gunn’s film will introduce David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film was a huge tonal and narrative change for the DC Studios, one that redefined the basis of the franchise. As for Snyder, there are currently no official plans for his return to DC.

Still, he mentioned an old dream of his: to make The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller a faithful, uncompromising film. Not tied to the DCEU. Not a continuation. Nothing but a simple page-to-screen translation.
In the meantime, however, Snyder is happy to see Superman fly in other hands. And honestly? Such mutual respect could be precisely what DC fans wanted to hear.
