Disney has spent the last two decades turning many of its beloved animated classics into live-action pieces, often with massive box-office success. Yet not every remake makes it to the finish line.
In a surprising update, another planned adaptation has quietly disappeared from Disney’s lineup. The studio has reportedly scrapped its live-action remake of the 1973 animated film ‘Robin Hood‘, a project that once sounded like one of the most promising entries in Disney’s remake era.
Disney Cancels Its Planned ‘Robin Hood’ Live-Action Remake

For years, Disney has relied on live-action adaptations as a major part of its film strategy. Some projects closely recreate the original animated stories, such as ‘The Lion King‘ and ‘The Jungle Book‘. Meanwhile, others expand the universe of beloved characters through spinoffs or alternate perspectives, as seen in ‘Cruella‘ and ‘Maleficent‘.

Because of that, audiences have grown accustomed to hearing about new remakes entering development. However, one of those projects has now been officially abandoned. Carlos López Estrada announced during his recent Reddit AMA that Disney will no longer move forward with the ‘Robin Hood’ project.
The project was announced as a live-action and CGI hybrid remake of the 1973 animated version. The update came as a surprise, especially since there had been little indication that the film was in trouble. When asked about the project, Estrada answered directly: “It’s dead, sadly.” He also shared his disappointment about the decision, explaining that the film had strong creative potential.
Naturally, the news feels surprising because the ‘Robin Hood‘ legend has appeared in countless live-action adaptations over the decades. In addition, recent success for animal-driven stories like ‘Zootopia‘, which is getting a sequel, suggested that a new version of ‘Robin Hood‘ could have fit well into Disney’s current lineup.
The Canceled Film Had An Ambitious Creative Vision

Despite initial disappointment, many fans are pointing out that it is for the best that the project was dropped. According to them, the 1973 movie is a beloved classic that shouldn’t be touched again. However, Estrada’s comments have revealed how much planning had already gone into the remake. The director, who previously worked on ‘Raya and the Last Dragon‘, had planned a distinctive approach for the film.

Kari Granlund was writing the screenplay. As Granlund previously worked on ‘Lady and the Tramp,’ that makes her a familiar collaborator on Disney’s remake projects. Meanwhile, Disney’s remake strategy has repeatedly delivered impressive financial results despite ongoing debates among fans. Several live-action adaptations have crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.
Because of those consistent box-office results, many industry observers believed a new ‘Robin Hood‘ film could have attracted a large audience as well. Moreover, Estrada’s creative approach might have helped the project stand out among Disney’s other remakes. Even though the ‘Robin Hood‘ remake will no longer move ahead, Disney continues developing other live-action adaptations.
