Meet Vhagar: The Largest Dragon In The ‘House Of The Dragon’

HBO’s magnum opus ‘Game of Thrones’ now has its very own prequel titled ‘House of Dragon’ which explores the savage and bloody Targaryen civil war. Inspired by George R.R. Martin’s bestseller ‘Fire & Blood‘, the plot follows the most powerful family in Westeros and their internal politics. An essential part in this entire family drama is also played by Vhagar.

With the release of the show’s first season on August 21, 2022, it becomes important to know about the most ferocious dragons who are set to grace our screens. The series promises to show 17 dragons which include Caraxes ridden by Prince Daemon, Syrax ridden by Princess Rhaenyra, and Vhagar, one of the three legendary dragons who conquered Westeros among others.

With Balerion dead, the position of the largest ‘living’ dragon was taken by Vhagar. From what is known about Vhagar, she hatched from a Dragon Egg on Dragonstone during the Century of Blood. She was then named after a God of the Valyrian Freehold. Queen Visneya was the first ever to ride Vhagar and proved herself to be a dragon rider before she married Aegon. The queen used her to set ablaze the Arryn fleet that had captured one-third of Targaryen’s ships. Vhagar even provided the flames to light up the funeral pyre of King Aegon I.

The death of Queen Visneya in 44 AC left Vhagar without a rider and she remained unridden for twenty-nine years until Prince Baleon the Brave rode her in 73 AC. This made Vhagar the last of the three Targaryens to have fought in the conquest. She once again became riderless after Prince Baelon died in 101 AC.

As we have already seen, Vhagar has had several riders and in the Dance of Dragons, she is flown by Laena Velaryon and Prince Aemond Targaryen. Laena Valeryon is the eldest child of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. She is also the second wife of Daemon Targaryen. She was one of the many Dragonriders who rode Vhagar.

Prince Aemon Targaryen is also known as the Dragon Knight and is the second son of King Visery II and Lady Larra Rogare. He has been referred to as the noblest knight to ever live and his excellent swordsmanship is well known throughout the Seven Kingdoms.

During the Dance of the Dragons, Aemond started riding the dragon and they both developed a beautiful bond. He continued to fly Vhagar in battle during the civil war between King Aegon II and Queen Rhaenyra. He flew her Storm’s End to win the support of Lord Borros Baratheon for King Aegon II. Vhagar was the only dragon who left the battle almost unscathed and the duo continued to destroy anything and everything in their way.

Fans are certainly excited to see more of this mighty dragon as the show progresses.
