Netflix Shelves Kerri Strug Biopic As Millie Bobby Brown Departs

A planned Netflix biopic about Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug has been scrapped after Millie Bobby Brown exited the project over creative differences with producers, according to Deadline.

The film, titled Perfect, was set to chronicle Strug’s iconic performance at the 1996 Olympic Games, where she competed despite an ankle injury and helped secure a team gold medal for the United States. Brown had been attached to star in the lead role.

Sources cited by Deadline said Brown left the production due to disagreements over the film’s direction. Representatives for Brown, Netflix and Strug have not publicly commented on the reported development. The project had undergone several behind-the-scenes changes.

Gia Coppola was initially attached to direct before Cate Shortland took over directing duties. John P. Lopez and Ronnie Sandahl were reportedly working on the screenplay.

Strug, who is now 48, was part of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, famously known as the “Magnificent Seven” at the 1996 Olympic Games. Her second vault, performed after sustaining an ankle injury on her first attempt, secured gold in the team event. She was later carried off the mat by coach Béla Károlyi, a moment that remains one of the most iconic images in Olympic history.

In addition, Brown is attached to a screen adaptation of her 2023 novel Nineteen Steps.
