Sydney Sweeney attended Sporting CP’s Primeira Liga match against G.D. Estoril Praia on February 28 at Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, where the home side secured a 3–0 victory. The win keeps Sporting within four points of league leaders FC Porto ahead of their upcoming meeting on Tuesday, a matchup that could play a key role in the title race.
The Lisbon club is also preparing for a UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash against FK Bodø/Glimt. After the final whistle, Sweeney was presented with a personalized Sporting jersey featuring “Sydney” on the back.
She also met the club’s lion mascot, Jubas, and stepped onto the pitch following the match. During her visit, the actress attempted a shot on goal and, despite missing, drew attention for her playful reaction. After the attempt, Sweeney raised both hands to cover her ears, mimicking the celebration popularized by former Sporting captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes spent three seasons in Lisbon before completing a move to Manchester United F.C. in January 2020. He introduced the ear-covering gesture during his time at Sporting and has continued using it in the Premier League, where he now serves as United’s captain. The celebration is widely interpreted as a response to outside criticism.

Sydney Sweeney’s name also surfaced in a separate sports discussion in the United States this week. During Thursday’s episode of NFL Live, ESPN analyst Peter Schrager referenced the actress while discussing Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Schrager said, “Put it in the books right now because we all fall in love with draft prospects. Other guys have crushes on Sydney Sweeney and Halle Berry. I am in full-blown crush mode with Sonny Styles. I love watching the highlights and I love everything I’m hearing from teams.”
