“Absolute Pillar Of The Industry”: Kevin Feige Says Sequels Are Cornerstone Of The Film Industry

Kevin Feige, the visionary president of Marvel Studios, is no stranger to success. With a string of blockbuster hits under his belt, he’s proven himself to be a master of his craft. But there has to be something that drives this creative genius.

In a recent interview with Variety, Feige called the concept of sequels the “absolute pillar of the industry” and also spoke about his passion for world-building and the art of sequel-making. Here’s what he said.

Kevin Feige expressed his unwavering belief in the power of returning to beloved characters and expanding their stories. The Marvel Studios president has often been credited with revolutionizing the superhero genre. However, his love for sequels is somewhat of a hot take.

During the interview, he revealed that he was always drawn to the idea of building upon established worlds, much like the iconicStar Wars ‘universe created by George Lucas. “I like that, ‘Lucasian,’” Feige said, playfully referencing the legendary filmmaker. “Yes. I always liked the world-building and being able to return to characters. I was always excited for sequels.”

His enthusiasm for sequels stands in stark contrast to the often-heard criticisms leveled at the practice. Moreover, his defense of sequels comes at a time when the film industry is increasingly reliant on franchises and reboots. While some critics argue that this trend stifles originality, Feige believes that sequels offer a unique opportunity to deepen characters and explore new storylines.

Kevin Feige’s admiration for George Lucas, the creator of ‘Star Wars‘, is evident in his approach to universe-building. When asked about what his “pinnacle of success” was, he claimed that doing anything at all in a movie lot would suffice.

However, what made his appreciation for George Lucas clear was his next statement. To him, the peak of success would be to be able to build universes like George Lucas built. “From trimming the hedges on a movie lot to being George Lucas and creating universes, I would have been happy anywhere in between,” he said.

It is perhaps obvious that Feige’s love for sequels was a result of his fascination with Lucas. Moreover, Feige has definitely reached the top of the pyramid. Marvel’s interconnected web of characters and storylines has raised the bar for cinematic universes.
