“Being Black, I’m Like, ‘I’mma Die”: Anthony Mackie Thought His Marvel Journey Would End With ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Until Chris Evans Dropped A Surprise

Anthony Mackie, known for his role as Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently shared a fascinating behind-the-scenes story about his journey to donning the mantle of Captain America. 

Now, Mackie’s first solo adventure as Captain America is about to hit theatres with ‘Captain America: Brave New World‘. However, before getting the shield, the actor feared being killed off at any moment.

Anthony Mackie shared that he initially believed his character was doomed to die in ‘Avengers: Endgame‘. “He goes, ‘Have you read the new script?’ I said ‘no’ … he said, ‘you don’t know?‘” Mackie recounted. Given the high stakes of the film and the somber tone surrounding the potential losses, Mackie feared the worst.

Being black, I’m like, ‘I’mma die… damn. They’re getting rid of me, man!’” To his surprise, Chris Evans, who portrayed Captain America, invited Mackie to his basement to read the script. The moment Mackie reached the part where Captain America hands him the shield, his confusion was palpable. 

“I’m like, ‘So why did you give me the shield?‘” Mackie questioned Evans. Evans’s response was simply, “Because you’re fucking Captain America.” In ‘Endgame’, after a time heist to retrieve the Infinity Stones, Captain America returns to the past to live a fulfilling life with Peggy Carter. He then returned to the present as an elderly man, passing the mantle of Captain America and the iconic shield to Sam Wilson.

The latest trailer of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ has fans buzzing with excitement. Despite not revealing much, the trailer offered fans a glimpse into the threats Sam Wilson will face as he steps fully into the role of the star-spangled hero.

It kicks off with a meeting between Sam and the newly elected U.S. President, Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford. Things take a dramatic turn when the meeting goes awry, plunging Sam into the heart of a global conspiracy. For Mackie, the stakes are higher than ever.

Fans are also introduced to Giancarlo Esposito’s villain, Sidewinder, whose motives remain shrouded in mystery. Additionally, the trailer’s climax teases a jaw-dropping moment: Thaddeus Ross’s transformation into Red Hulk. This iconic villain promises to challenge Sam in ways he’s never encountered before.
