‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is Playing A Risky Game With Captain America’s Legacy

In Short
  • The Marvel Cinematic Universe faces challenges with 'Avengers: Doomsday' regarding Captain America's legacy.
  • The film features multiple characters associated with the Captain America mantle, risking dilution of its significance.
  • Steve Rogers' return could undermine Sam Wilson's growth as the current Captain America, complicating the franchise's new direction.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is walking into dangerous territory with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The franchise had to rebrand its heroes in a new age after the emotional finality of ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Rather, it is possibly making one of its most significant legacies difficult. With multiple shield-bearers reportedly in the mix, the film could unintentionally dilute what once made the title feel singular and sacred. Legacy is powerful. Legacy is powerful. Overexposure? Not so much.

Steve Rogers’ Return Threatens To Complicate MCU’s New Era

At this moment, the MCU has three characters directly related to the Captain America mantle. The present and rightful Captain America is Sam Wilson, who inherited the shield. John Walker was briefly in the position but rebranded himself. And then there is Steve Rogers, the original icon, the living legend whose return is the only thing fans are talking about.

Sam’s life has already been complicated. He questioned himself, threw away the shield, took it back, and at last entered the role on his own conditions. It was dirty, filthy, and significant. However, when Steve returns to the limelight, he risks a lot. It completely dismisses Sam Wilson’s growth. And, to be frank, regardless of how much Marvel claims that this is a new era, viewers are conditioned to respond to Steve Rogers. Nostalgia is powerful, and it works.

Too Many Captain Americas Might Become ‘Avengers: Doomsday’s Fatal Flaw

It is not about whether Steve should come back or not, or whether he makes Sam a stronger or weaker Captain America. Sam represents evolution. He isn’t a super-soldier. He does not reflect Steve physically or ideologically. He reinvents the appearance and the meaning of Captain America in a contemporary world. That’s compelling. That’s necessary.

In case you missed it: ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Might Use Magneto To Launch Marvel’s X-Men Future

However, when ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ overindulges in cliches rather than investing in the present heroes, it runs the risk of sending the wrong message: that the future still relies on the past. And there is the multiverse wildcard. Alternate Captain Americas have already been explored by the MCU, such as Captain Carter in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

Put too many variations in a single crossover, and the symbol ceases to be special. The shield used to have a single meaning. Otherwise, ‘Doomsday’ may make that symbol a mere cameo role. And that would be a real loss for the next era of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
